Crystal Web DSL performance feedback thread Part 4...

Internet running slow and high latency last 24 hours...

Crystal web need to preserve their network because if it dips in quality there is nothing worth staying for. For example (in my experience):

  • I am still unable to log into the rumoured 'client zone' after 6 months, or change my password (and the page doesn't even load in firefox).
  • Last time I managed to log in it didn't have the correct package in there, just the free trial which they were unable to remove.
  • Support can be good but goes offline.
  • I have no way to change my connection password
  • There is literally no way to know how much bandwidth you have used unless you subscribe to daily usage emails and subtract each day's usage from the monthly total.
  • These notices you can only disable/enable via contacting a rep.
  • As far as I know there is no way to top up bandwidth without contacting them directly (so it has to be done manually through contact and during office hours).

So ya, just keep that network good because let's be honest, Crystal web is years behind the other players in terms of usability. For some of us network quality is enough but it has to work properly.

Strangely me streaming has been awesome for the past few weeks and i have upgraded recently to 350GB package, no issues with youtube, Amazon Prime UHD, Netflix UHD or any other HD streaming. my usage has increased to between 400GB-600GB, but i'm not complaining for now.

I haven't really had an issue with throughput either, just the latency.

Really wondering if its time to leave CW. Never thought I would say that but nearly every night my latency in international games shoots up from 250ms to 550ms (This is only in games as far as I can see so its not exchange congestion)

Twitch performance has been terrible as well. I can barely stream 480P on my 40Mbps VDSL.

Speed test shows everything is fine. Anyone else still seeing issues in the evening or has moved to another ISP and seen an improvement?

Will miss the news server but this is just leaving a bad taste in my mouth.

Do a speedtest locally and internationally and post them here.

The likely cause for the Twitch issues is the latency you're experiencing as latency and bandwidth are related (for TCP streams)

Regarding the news server, Crystal Web uses @savage's NextGenNews so look at getting a standalone subscription from them if you move. It might even be cheaper at the end if you move to another ISP like Vox or TI since their prices have dropped so much recently.

I think it’s about time MyBB does an article about the best ISP’s based on includes extras like News Servers.

@rpm

Also include things such as free data, free hardware and such. Would be a great article.

Actually, Twitch is due to the default option of selecting the London point for streams, picking pretty much any other PoP gives better results.
On Chrome you can use: https://www.crx4chrome.com/extensions/nnahmgokconolakhpdmgnmgaokhjcncb/

There is a thread about it, can't find it atm.

EDIT: Here it is: https://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/894516-Twitch-Buffer-Issues

They really have gone down the ****ter.

Started a chat just now to inquire about the latest process for cancelling and of course they want to convince me that they can fix it quickly.

Note Speedtest is about 5Mb down on a 20MB VDSL line as the start of the chat.

Do their whole thing of custom speedtest and all that but I notice that for all of 5 seconds my DNS isn't resolving but there is no status change on my PPPoE account side.

Magically it's suddenly at 17Mb down and I get told that they are happy it's working now but when they test my line there is a copper fault and I'll need to call Telkom.

So I hit back and say no I won't call Telkom, you can call Telkom cause the line is hosted with you and in the 2+ years I've been with CW I've never needed to call Telkom even once.

Chirps me that only the data is with them not the line, so I just copied and pasted the line item from the Invoice and asked them if I needed to forward this to Shaun Kaplan before I disconnected.

If only Telkom's bloody application process wasn't so laborious I would have done it already and switched to the new HomeUncapped option.

I'm on the home capped package, downloading during off peak 'free' time but it seems that every time I finish a sizable download (say 30-40gig) the news server ceases to work for a spell.

Am I overusing and getting throttled?

I haven't really changed my behaviour since I started with CW, what gives?

I'm curious as to what happened to CW's presence on these forums?
