Cybersmart replacement ISP

Big up to Openweb. I applied for this at 16:23 yesterday, received confirmation @ 17:05. How is that for first class service? Thanks Keoma.

Indeed... it is reassuring to encounter this.

Big up to Openweb. I applied for this at 16:23 yesterday, received confirmation @ 17:05. How is that for first class service? Thanks Keoma.

I am STILL awaiting ANY feedback from Cybersmart regarding my faxed cancellation. The helpdesk assures me that someone will be in contact regarding the cancellation. My email messages have not be responded to either. Very poor show from Cybersmart this. Pfffffft.

Hooray. Today Cybersmart phoned and confirmed cancellation fax receipt. Yay.

Cybersmart even recommended that I keep the line with them and go to MWeb :wtf: for uncapped ADSL. Really ! True !

What I have feared is they do not do anything other than cancel the ADSL line that is currently with them.
I will have to then re-apply via Telkom for ADSL service.

What-a-ball-ache.

Eish. Do I bite the bullet and take the Telkom re-application for ADSL route or just let Cybersmart supply the line (they EVEN give me 1GB free ADSL with the line). W00T not.

Decisions decisions. I hate these types of choices. I would really like to tell them to shove it, and go the Telkom route... but the thought of possible run-around and rubbish is off-putting. How bad can it be, Cyberfart having the line only (I EVEN get 1GB free)... ??

Grrrrr.

Hi NomNom

I have already signed-up with OpenWeb Gold... so I do not need another ISP. I just thought it was rich of them promoting Mweb. They only want the line part of my business... or that was the impression they left me with.

I would really like this to be as painless as possible. I have already stuffed-up the cancellation once, by emailing, not faxing them (it HAS to be faxed to them before the 25th of the month)... so I do not want to stuff-up this line thing as well.

Perhaps use CS as the line provider and take it from month to month... ? Surely a line is a line is a line ?

Rather save yourself the head ache and keep the line with cs and apply for a uncapped account from mweb.

w00t w00t - just received my OpenWeb login details !

Everything is just flowing again... it is all just working again.

Yay! Please, internet god'z, let it stay like this !

EDIT: I hope it is OK that I am using the OpenWeb account now... it is only meant to be active on the 1st of July ! :}

mweb.. safest bet with family and friends.. trust me, they're the biggest and are progressing the fastest with network quality upgrading and spending on infrastructure.

Hey Hey

It is only a few hours into the OpenWeb account... but so far it is all very yummy ! Music is a streaming ! Updates are a-updating ! Email is emailing ! MyBB is loading ! Websites are flying ! Aaaaand all at the same time again and all without stutter / buffer / reload / refresh / retry that had become the Cybersmart trademark of late. All on my little 384kbs line.

OpenWeb Gold FTW !!!

It better stay like this.... it just must.

Hey kilo,

Which backbone did you go onto? I had some problems with IS so I asked to move to the VC backbone...but the torrents aren't TOO good there. I'll be moved back to IS on Saturday (I just find the torrents to be best with them...yes, yes...I torrent :p ). I was just curious where you ended up. (Or did you request to specifically be put somewhere?)
Anyways, welcome to and enjoy the awesomeness that is the GOLDenness! ;)

What.What.

I have absolutely no idea! I am using whatever their login has put me on... I have no knowledge of backbones etc... I don't torrent so I cannot answer about that. I did not request anything special from them, just signed-up for their Gold  promotion last month.

What would you like me to check ?

At this moment it is working perfectly. Everything is just silky smooth again. My coffee tastes good. My flu muti is klapping the snots and I have my interwebs again.

* sighs and smiles *

So, I thought I'd be out the throttled pool this month. Nope... evidently not using the account, like they state, is still abusive. <_<

Oh, well. Time to download EVERYTHING on Youtube (as a middle finger, considering that's not throttled) seeing I've got this month paid for, again...

* grins *

Not a single audio stream buffer so far this morning. Silky smooth... even with an 8 year old YouTubing on his PC.

OpenWeb = at the moment !

Ok, you can tell the backbone by the "ISP" in your speedtest result...so looks like you're on BCS. Can't say I've been on there, so not quite sure what performance is like (by the sounds of it, it's working pretty well for you. Nice.)

Could not disagree more...

what is your rationale here?

family and friends.. im assuming the non-tekkie type. i.e people that dont need to squeeze every mb and every kb/s of every day and who likely do not need the low latency for gaming either.

My rationale is that mweb is big. mweb is simple. mweb's call centre is relatively well jacked. In most instances very user friendly. Mweb is a market leader who first offered uncapped and still remains one of the best priced isps. when things go wrong, mweb has a reputation to uphold and again they are a large corporate so they have more power to deal with downtime.

I stick to my guns. For non-tekkie friends and family its the way to go with least amount of headaches.

- This is a mistake in my opinion.

It might not be the best option for most users.

- Answered below.

As I've found the bigger the ISP, the less likely you are able to to obtain assistance with a specific issue. I generally stay away from companies that are big, and support the smaller guys, as they have something to prove. You might want to visit http://www.hellopeter.com/ and compare MWEB's percentage of good service or consult this article, http://mybroadband.co.za/news/telecoms/27523-broadband-providers-in-sa-service-levels-compared.html.

- Can't agree.

If you perceive them as the market leader due to the excellent work their PR shop has done, it might not be accurate. (now resigned, as they are unwilling to take advice) MWEB (NasPers) was bought out by guys that gave MWEB a very tight deadline to convert their dial-up clients to ADSL or they would be chopped up and sold, therefore the uncapped accounts. The company you should be thanking is Altech.

As for MWEB and downtime, they go hand in hand both on Internet connectivity and hosting, they have a rather dismal record.

I stick to my guns. For non-tekkie friends and family its the way to go with least amount of headaches.
- Completely agree.

For those that don't really care about shaping, not receiving emails, not being able to access their domain, etc. and do not have any technical skills and a limited budget MWEB is definitely the way to go. However, the uncapped offering from MWEB is expensive if you are not a torrent user, when calculating your actual usage over a 12 month period and comparing it to an unshaped connection priced at R 9.50 per GB.

Hey Hey

Quick update ... downloading new Nvidia drivers at 36Kbs while streaming Soma FM at 128k without a single buffer. With Cybersmart I could not even stream at 32k and neither could I download at anything above 20Kbs.

OpenWeb Gold was indeed the way to go for me... or so far at least. I cannot believe the struggle to get anything usable from Cybersmart when this was just waiting in the wings!

OpenWeb Gold =

But see...this is what I've been advocating right from the beginning. At first I WAS going to go with mweb...but then I researched a bit further. I found this guy that had this blog -can't for the life of me remember who or what - and he tried mweb, was not impressed, went over to OW and had nothing but good things to say. Then all the mweb issues started happening and that was just the push I needed.
Signed up for standard, Gold promo happened a month later, went on to that...and here I am...one year later and still happy as a pig in sh i t. (Laughing at the mweb guys who seem to have nothing but endless trouble...and other ISPs, I guess.)
Not ONCE have I been offline. Through all the seacoms, etc, etc, etc, my torrents and downloads and EVERYTHING has been cruising sweetly.

My point is : OpenWeb DEF FTW, no two ways about it, period.
