Cybersmart replacement ISP

Heya Sl8er

I was also contemplating Mweb... it was a toss-up between MWeb and OpenWeb. I emailed MWeb with a query from their site, and am still awaiting a reply... then I emailed the same query on the OpenWeb site and got a response almost immediately... including a request from Keoma for my telephone number so he could phone and discuss my query if I liked.

Then the MWeb threads started snowballing with negative feedback... and the OpenWeb special popped-up.

By this stage it was no contest between the two. I chose OpenWeb... and so far, have absolutely nothing but praise for this ISP.

May this be the start of a wonderful friendship... me and OpenWeb Gold!

But see...this is what I've been advocating right from the beginning. At first I WAS going to go with mweb...but then I researched a bit further. I found this guy that had this blog -can't for the life of me remember who or what - and he tried mweb, was not impressed, went over to OW and had nothing but good things to say. Then all the mweb issues started happening and that was just the push I needed.
Signed up for standard, Gold promo happened a month later, went on to that...and here I am...one year later and still happy as a pig in sh i t. (Laughing at the mweb guys who seem to have nothing but endless trouble...and other ISPs, I guess.)
Not ONCE have I been offline. Through all the seacoms, etc, etc, etc, my torrents and downloads and EVERYTHING has been cruising sweetly.

My point is : OpenWeb DEF FTW, no two ways about it, period.

Slight necro for an update on the Cybersmart situation.

I was going to cancel my account and download as much as I could before being cut off (Steam/Youtube are unrestricted), but I ended up forgetting to cancel. I ended up doing 40GB last month (Steam sales, ftw!) and as soon as this new months rolled in I noticed something change...

I'm no longer throttled and my internet is faster than I've ever had it before (no shaping whatsoever). I thought I was on my Afrihost account for a second until I triple checked it was indeed Cybersmart. JDownloader even shows my downloads to be going at a deadflat rate of 40kbps (384k line) with NO dip throughout the 1GB download. I must say, it makes Afrihost look like ****e now. :p

Have to agree, they seemed to have resolved most of the issues:

"upstream providers will be performing maintenance on 6 August 2011 between 12am and 6am Saturday morning and there will be intermittent international connectivity during this time."

As for Afrihost, their bandwidth is not unshaped, see:

I would understand if it's not unshaped, but what I'm unhappy about is that my JDownloader graph is like a rollercoaster
On a normal day this is what it would look like (every few seconds):
39kbps
13kbps
24kbps
39kbps
7kbps
28kbps

The R1 special was a bit more stable (which I found weird that my account I paid for (full price) would be up to ****) but still not amazing.

Thanks for pointing that out, though. Still going strong with Cybersmart. So glad I didn't leave.

You can not get shaped, Cybersmart sell unshaped bandwidth. If they shape you then it goes against the contract you are signing up for.

With regards to the uncapped accounts, you did agree to it being unshaped so long as you stay within an acceptable usage.

Is Lounger with every ISP under the sun, and the most unluckiest person ever that he's having crap from all of them, or is he/she perhaps just bitching for the sake of it? Every thread I open is the same...

Let's see if Rah rah smarty pants is willing to tell us what the "acceptable range" is or is it like a pot-luck surprise arrangement? (expects no reply).

180GB over 6 months for SAOL. Cybersmart had theirs at 20GB, afaik.

Excuse me for the late reply, I don't come onto the forums each day.

Hey Hey

Quick update ... downloading new Nvidia drivers at 36Kbs while streaming Soma FM at 128k without a single buffer. With Cybersmart I could not even stream at 32k and neither could I download at anything above 20Kbs.

OpenWeb Gold was indeed the way to go for me... or so far at least. I cannot believe the struggle to get anything usable from Cybersmart when this was just waiting in the wings!

OpenWeb Gold =

Hey dude

Have you kept your line with Cybersmart?
Really tempted to leave CS once and for all!

It took them 2 months to upgrade my line to 1024. However, a week after applying for the upgrade I started to get 4mb speeds.

So I've had 4mb speeds for two months which I'm not complaining about but just shows how asleep they are. Since my line has been on 1024, I get shocking speeds from cybersmart.

For example: Downloading a torrent today. Average of 16kb/s. Swap to my Web Africa account and I instantly get 65kb/s.

I am wanting to get a 4mb line with Telkom and buy a data package with one of the ISP's that actually has customer service :P.

Hi Hi

Yes I have kept my line with Cybersmart... was easier than having it transferred.

You HAVE to fax them the cancellation...
They should then phone you to confirm... this they did with me... and they are quick to recommend keeping the line with them!
They were not interested in convincing me to stay, but they sure did want my line.

Thanks - Do you still have to send a fax cancelation or will they just convert your service to line?

Ok - Now I just have to find a data package that can fit into our budget. Thanks a lot for your help!
