even R272 for 10gb is much better than the R259 for 3gb's most clients had prior to this whole weekender / uncapped fiasco that has been going on.
if i were getting 10gb's for that price i probably wouldn't have even consider changing accounts to the weekender (or to the new night rider), it's more than enough.

Great thing is our bandwidth is Unshapped. How awesome is that?
 
That is definitely one of the best things about it.

i was talking to a friend earlier [about 384kbps lines] and said that they should keep the 3gig package for those who do not pay their line rental through cybersmart, and for those who do have say a 10gb package for those who do [at a price similar to what they are offering in their new packages], i know plenty of people who don't really care about uncapped weekends or nights, they just want to be pretty sure that they won't run out of bandwidth half way through the month, or have to pour in money every time they get a little youtube/browsing happy.

So basically what i'm saying, is if they had 10gb account, 384 line, for R299 a month, instead of bringing in all these weird uncapped times/days, they would've still gotten customers, and probably wouldn't be loosing the download happy ones.

Nothing wrong with it, you just can't oversell it if all of the people are using up the whole lot. Ultimately you will have to increase the price if everyone is using up all 20GB's so then no one will benefit from the deal.

My argument was just that when you put on a "limit", people tend to use up until that limit.

so you have weekender plus night rider- therefor you are able to spread out your internet usage- others with only weekender have to keep their heavy usage to the time allocated to them. I have only used about 19 GB too

not only did they not mention any fair use, but they also encouraged downloads. common sense is knowing not to run across a busy highway, but that too is founded on foreknowledge. If you bring a bushman to the city, he may or may not know what he is meant to do without first observing, or being given some form of guidance. Unlike "wonderful" America that has had uncapped for a long time, this is still relatively new ground to us "humble" south africans. This is the first time I have ever signed up for uncapped, so no I did not know what to expect. That is when I look at the terms and conditions in order to establish the parameters of acceptable behavior, and rely on their communications to alter any incorrect assumptions.

dude, they are not doing us any favors here- this is a service that they are offering, and we are customers, paying them good money to make use of that service. So no, this is not a privilege, but a mutually beneficial business relationship, that is all. If mcDonalds (Lets use an analogy an american can really sink his teeth into) offers to upsize their fries on their Mcmeals, we do not just accept it when the fries arrive burned- well it is a privilege to get em extra fries after all, no, we send the food back and demand them to deliver on their promises.

have you ever considered that maybe the reason you dont see the need to download all the time is because you CAN get speeds of 70mbps? I have a 384kbps line. I cannot stream anything, even a youtube video because its too slow, it takes 7 hours to download the latest version of Ubuntu etc etc etc, so I do my weekly downloading over the weekend, and then use it during the week- nothing wrong with that.

so do we, im sitting on 19GB this month, and so are most of the people that have been downgraded- in fact Laurie said that it was only possible to get 26 GB a month on weekender- so actually there is no difference between us. 20 GB may be fine for you, but different people have different needs, for someone using 2GB a month, they would call you a glutton- its all relative.

no, I would compare it to going to the louvre and seeing the mona lisa. you cannot afford it so you sneak out your camera, take a picture, and create a print to hang up in your home.

that said, I used the entire bandwidth on youtube, an old series that is not available to purchase and open source software, so your claims are BS

You did 19GB on a 384kbps and I did 19GB on a 4mbps, how do you NOT see a difference? I only downloaded Playstation demos and gamed online.... I don't see what the problem is here.

but you are assuming that I was downloading just for the sake of downloading, and would have downloaded more if not limited by the 384kbps line speed. That is not true. or maybe you think that becuase I have a slower line speed that I should now stick to applications that take up less space- get the duke nukem 3d demo because that can fit on 6 stiffies. why should my needs be any less than yours, just because I am on a slower line. So having addressed those issues, im afraid I do NOT see the difference

If you did not d/load any piracy etc then I don't see a problem. You started the comparison in the first place, not me.

I don't have a Cybersmart account. I have personally used around 30GB of data on my WA account this month. Nothing illegal in there at all as I don't believe in copying software/games/etc. I am in the software development field and I would not want people to copy our software. Our average usage is around 800Meg per day and then just add the latest Office 2010 downloads which came with our Action Pack.
 
I download basically only late night till the next morning. I surf and play online games during the day on weekends and at night, so i can't download then.

Here's my usage btw:

Used this month outside NightRider time (8am-00:59am) 2.96GB
14.79 Gigs used in NightRider time (1am-7:59am).
10.54 Gigs used in NightRider time on the weekend (1am-7:59am).
9.69 Gigs used during weekender (Midnight Fri -5:59am Mon).

I did more than 40GB worth of downloads last month, but I download at night so I don't care about it.

Oh, and my weekender is still active. We'll see what happens next month.
 
Schickelgruber, you have to remember that we have come a long way to get to the point where our internet is today, and it still does not nearly compare to just about any internet connection you could get in the US. The result of it has been that a fair many of us use every little bit of internet we can get our paws on, and will continue to do so until we get decent speeds and decent usage amounts all the time. The little bit we are getting could be taken away from us at any time in the country we are living in, there is no secure future here, not in infrastructure, not in service delivery.

Another point, I pay about R500 for my ADSL on the whole. In the US with your high speed line, did you even pay that much for your 80mbps line? We are paying much more here for speeds and usages that could not even compare to that of the US on a good day. Add to that that this is a third world country, and most people here earn a fraction of what your average US citizen would earn, but we have to pay double or triple the amount you would for a service that is multiple times worse. So yes, of course people will use and abuse it as much as they can. If everyone had to walk 10km down the road to get water, they would take all their empty containers that they can spare and that they can carry and fill them up. Now if you give them taps at home for water, and you can only get a bucket of water out every 30 minutes, how are they expected to shower or take a bath, or water the garden or wash the car? They would have to keep the tap open all day to get all the water they need. How do you solve this? Give them water that runs fast enough to fill a bucket in under 20 seconds. Then they won't run it the whole time. They will still fill a bath, wash a car, shower, water the garden, and in some cases fill a swimming pool, but I am sure they are more likely to not run it the whole time at higher speeds and allowances than abusing it then.

that is my exact view . last month i downloaded 4 series (cos dstv will only give them to me next year). and a psp game (not available in south africa ) . all totalling 20 gb . and this month 2 series in hd and two movies (total 12 gb ) . last weekend i only did 500 mb (skype + win updates) and well i had and currently have no reason to use more till the next time a series attracts my eye . im assuming the real tv addicts that watch everything will need a longer period to fill the inadequacy of dstv but their usage will drop.

to put schick in perspective we pay dstv a large sum of money yet we still get the programs that the us & uk watched a year or two ago . we would love to go the ledgit way infact you tell me where i can get these shows legally before next year within sa and il cancel dstv and go there and buy the dvd sets.

Hey man, I understand your view and thank you for being kind enough to explain. I paid about $15 for my uncapped 70mbps or there about. Not bad I say.
