Cybersmart...:(

Been capped (3gig bandwidth allowance) for using 2.766 gigs after getting disconnected and authentication failed atleast 10 times before successfully reconnecting. Mailing info(at)cybersmart with a link to this thread. Maybe we will get some answers from them.

Can a mod sticky this thread until we get a response from Cybersmart? TIA

No problems on my side, my 384k downloads at 40kbps all the time. Very happy camper and got a nice billion 7300 router for free.

news server downloads at 40kbps as well

I've been a Cybersmart client for about 2 years.
None of the 'issues' mentioned in this thread have ever affected me. I have not felt threatened, intimidated or bullied by any of the items being complained about here. (the "laws" you whine about).
Okay, at least. expecting delivery of my router today. Made an online application on the 11th of this month so a 9 day turnaround is not bad. The line had to be provisioned for DSL through Telkom...

I've had no real issues with cybersmart. All have been Telkom related and Cybersmart have been good enough the log the issues on my behalf.

I do think Cybersmart's telephone support staff are stupid. If they pay peanuts, you get monkeys.

The one ISP only rule is nonsense, I've always ignored it and they've never said a thing. Would they really cancel my contract and lose business? I think ppl are worrying over a rule they can't enforce.

Can anyone prove that there is a cheaper ISP than Cybersmart?
Look here to check for yourself:
http://www.hellkom.co.za/ispprices/adsl-3gb.php

Well actually, yes. Remember that Cybersmart is the cheapest on 384k lines... But lets take for example a 4mb line. At Axxess its R179.00 (not the cheapest but axxess have amazing support). Now at Cybersmart its R 225.00.

So unless you are on a 384k line, its more expensive.

Yes it's not a good rule to have. Interestingly the reason they gave is they receive too many support calls from people who have multiple accounts, and apparently they were using too much time and money fixing issues which have nothing to do with Cybersmart, but to do with some idiot calling in who can't login because he bricked his router trying to setup it up for his other ISP account(s).

That may be a terrible excuse, considering no other ISP does it.

However, it's pointless writing off Cybersmart over something that in my 2 years has never affected me, despite how monopolistic it seems to me

What about ADSL all in one costs. Isn't Cybersmart cheapest for a 4meg line with 3gb (R524)?

i have no clue, i prefer being able to choose what accounts i want per month, not being tied to 3gb.

What constitutes using another ISP? I currently use vodacom for my personnal email, iburst at the office and now recently cybersmart for a fast and cost affective package.

Are you saying I would be in breech of their contract if I synced Outlook to send and receive emails from all 3 accounts?

I've been relatively happy with them, minimal downtimes (for me at least) and usually pretty solid download speeds.

Don't worry about the issue of not being allowed to use another ISP. I've also been using them for a couple years while using other accounts and i have not been contacted about it once, heck I even asked their support how to put their (useless) router into bridge mode so i could use the other accounts!

Cybersmart

Ok, I am on a 384kb line, and so Cybersmart still is the cheapest ISP.
I wish I had a faster connection, but 384 is okay when you can vividly remember 56k dial-up.

I retrieve emails from non-Cybersmart accounts every day, and nobody has ever hassled me about it.

I am trying to say that if you are just a normal internet user, and do not have some compelling need for the fastest connection or no caps whatsoever, then Cybersmart is ok.

Hey, I want one too, how did you get it, wcoetzee?
I still have one of those horrid Marconi brick things.

Haha that piece of ****. I have 4 broken ones and the one I'm using now is starting giving me the same problems. They really don't last a month.:(
You joking!!! How do they break? What happens to them? I assume Cybersmart courier you new ones every time on their account?

Hell yes. They are paying. I have to send them back. They will pay for the courier fees too. The first 2 that broke. the ADSL light keeps on flickering it never goes solid. The third one gave me a little smoke and it was dead. The 4th one just freezed and doesn't respond at all. This one I have now is freezing for a hour that its dead no ADSL even the router doesn't respond in the browser so I have to switch it off for like 10min and it will work for about 2 hours then its down again. i struggle on like this for 2 months now cause they don't wanna send me a new one. Can I really blame them? But its their own fault. Thie Meccer router isin't any good. They want to save money but its costing them so much. The guy at cybersmart tells me that I'm not the only one. Atleast they did give me some service with replacing the routers. But the accounts suck!!!!!!!!!

Email me on [email protected] or [email protected] and we will send you a billion also free. It is probably best to email klari as I am between our durban and cape town office in the next couple of days

the one they gave me was buggy, did not reconnect automatically. had to switch it off and on every day to connect. so they gave me a new one
they also said, for R250 extra I can have a wireless router:cool:

Their AAA service is poorly set up and maintained (nor redundant). You can expect this kind of service from a service provider that asks the following to potential job applicants.

Will be changing my ISP to Axxess once the line is upgraded to 512.

Wow, this is a bold statement. It would be interesting to know how exactly you determined that the AAA service is poorly setup and even more interesting to know what makes you think their is no redundancy. With regards to redundancy
a) There are 4 radius servers, at least two are live at any given time
b) Administrators of these servers are sms'ed if an authentication response is above 1 second, it is usually below 0.3 and a response as slow as 3 seconds will authenticate

With regards to being badly setup. Name one other ISP that
a) will automatically authenticate you to the usage account if you are connected via you adsl line
b) does not let you overrun your cap, but caps you at what you have bought
c) warns you in the browser that you are capped
d) allows you to switch between your local and international cap DURING the month
e) allows you to do a rolled topup, or has a facility to save your gigs or has a nightrider product
f) allows you to pay per mb after your cap, but allows you to minimize the cost by topping up if it is cheaper to do so.
g) that displays the daily usage on the usage page, automatically updated every hour, broken down by both the international and local cap if applicable and what was used in and out of nightrider time if applicable

I admit that there is always room for improvement and we are constantly trying to improve things, but I would say we have made a fairly good start
