Cybersmart...:(

For what it's worth I'm very happy with the service I've received from Cybersmart since applying for a DSL line on the 11th of June. I can remember the date cause of Cybersmart's useful online progress report regarding the application. I don't think a 9 day turn around time is at all bad considering weekends and the public holiday on the 16th. Also my standard Telkom line had to be provisioned for DSL.

Applying and completing the online application was quick and easy and the documentation required to complete the application is minimal and was accepted via email.

The rates offered appear to be highly competitive and I'm enjoying the consistent speed of the service compared with the 3G product I been using up to now (I've subscribed to the 4096mbps offering and it's very sweet).

So all in all a big thumbs up to Cybersmart...

Email me on [email protected] or [email protected] and we will send you a billion also free. It is probably best to email klari as I am between our durban and cape town office in the next couple of days

Thanks for the offer but my cancellation fax is already sent. I have had too much of slow speeds bad usage counting and general bad service. No offence and I'm really sorry to say this but not even telkom gave much such hassles. Telkom refunded me before the following month when they by accedent over charged me. I made 1 call and it was sorted. Cybersmart I still have problem with the usage. Downloading a 699mb iso usally take about 1GB off the cap. The tracker doesn't like it when you download with torrents cause the usage is calculated wrongly most times. And please make the speed issue with oneprice accounts a priority!

A little off-topic... Not to insult your intelligence by pointing out the obvious, but do you realise that with torrents you are more than likely going to upload to other users as soon as you start downloading, and, by completion of your download, will have transferred more data than the size of the file you were downloading...? So, you would need to look at your 'downloaded' figure, and add that to your 'uploaded' figure for total bandwidth usage per torrent. Also, some pieces of the torrent you are downloading can fail, requiring you to re-download them, again resulting in more bandwidth being used than you would have thought...

After hearing of lots of people having problems i felt I should put them down. Below is just my complaint to them and of one other user.

Mine:

The other user:

And these are just 2 of many complaints...
I will never ever use cybersmart again. Its both cheaper, and more reliable to just use Webafrica or axxess.

Hi

There are a couple of points raised here some which are valid some are a figment of someones very vivid imagination. I will try address each one in turn
a) With regards to our terms of use. This subject has been dealt with ad nauseam on these forums. So as not to repeat myself please refer to my response here: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=118629&highlight=cybersmart+terms&page=6

b)With regards to slowness, we have experienced a bandwidth shortage between Feb till end of May. Bandwidth that we ordered in November last year did not arrive and when it did arrive, the order was only partially fulfilled. We do not have an issue now, in fact we are relatively undersold and if your account is slow is more likely than not that you have the DNS settings of another ISP, which is one of the reasons that our terms and conditions are as they are. We have already ordered our next upgrade even though we are undersold at the moment and if this upgrade is not available by the end of July, there is a potential of slowness. We have no indications as yet that there will be a delay.

c) If there is a mistake because you used your account in two places and the one line is a 4mb line and the other is a 384Kb but when the system checked it detected a 4Mb line, we will ALWAYS give you a credit even though you should not have been doing this in the first place.

d)The accounts are locked automatically to your location so that if your account is stolen, it cannot be used elsewhere. You must have a fair amount of cheek to steal an account, realise that it does not work because it is locked and phone in to ask for it to be unlocked. The voice calls are recorded so we don't do a security check as we deem the voice recording sufficient in a dispute to determine whether the customer did or did not authorise the location to be unlocked. If a location is unlocked erroneously and the voice calls indicate that it was not the customer that authorised it, the gigs will be refunded in terms of our "no stolen gigs" guarantee. There is a fine line between functionallity and security and we deem the security of a voice recording is sufficient for this particular function. If you require a bank details changed, you will need to fax a signed copy of the new details to us.

e)With regards to voice calls jumping around. The asterisk implementation was outsourced. This was a mistake. We have now brought this in-house and the problem has taken a while to fix. You will not jump around anymore. With regards to the system saying "estimated hold time 5 minutes" which then goes to "estimated hold time of 10 minutes" this is an indication that there is a general problem and that the current number of operators are not coping with the number of incoming calls. We have recently implemented a new system where this anomoly is detected, standby operators are sms'ed and are asked to take up additional load. This usually solves the problem.

f) With regards to nightrider not working. Please take note that there was a general offer to this forum to trial the offering for free before release. In fact there were even a couple of snide remarks that this was a marketing ploy. There were only 15 people who took up this offer and we did extensive testing of the product. Only once I received an ok from every one of the guys trialling did we release the product. I feel that we made every effort to determine correctness before releasing the product commercially, but as with every software release, it is possible that there are still errors and we will endeavor to fix every one of them as soon as humanly possible. An error report of "it does not work properly" does not really help isolating the error. I have recently received a well documented error report that shows that nightrider usage is not accounted correctly if the download starts at 1am and stops before 2am, I am working on this problem currently and it should be fixed before the end of next week at the latest. In the interim as a workaround, make sure your router does not disconnect between 1 and 2 or start the download after 2. I have worked in the open source environment for a number of years and it is a general accepted policy that a software bug/exploit is reported to the company with a "proof of concept" of when the bug/exploit occurs. The company is given a reasonable timeframe usually between 2 to 4 weeks to remedy the problem before the bug or exploit is released to the public or the company is flamed on a public forum. Since we were not afforded this courtesy I think the comment "it doesn't work" is a little unfair especially since the product is not even 2 months old and especially since the person who said this has not cancelled the nightrider service. The reason I can say this for certain without knowing who the person is, is that nobody has cancelled the nightrider service.

Regards

Laurie

Been capped (3gig bandwidth allowance) for using 2.766 gigs after getting disconnected and authentication failed atleast 10 times before successfully reconnecting. Mailing info(at)cybersmart with a link to this thread. Maybe we will get some answers from them.

Can a mod sticky this thread until we get a response from Cybersmart? TIA

I am sure this ticket has been assigned to me. I have been away since Thursday and I am not really in front of a computer consistently till next Thursday. If you sms me on 0832750616 I can deal with it over the phone. It is potentially possible to be capped early if you have multiple sessions open in bridge mode, but this is extremely rare and one of the reasons we discourage bridge mode.If you are capped erroneously the system is self monitoring and you will be uncapped. What is more concerning is that you could not authenticate immediately (because you should be able to authenticate immediately even when you are capped), without further info, this once again indicates to me that possibly you had multiple bridge sessions running and the system was attempting to kill all of them. Once I have the detail the issue will be resolved.

>> we have experienced a bandwidth shortage between Feb till end of May

Im an ex Cybersmarter and I do think it is poor PR managment that I eventually find out on this forum the reason why I dumped my account. Mmmm would have been nice I was told about this when I still had my account ... :-(

Besides this negative sentiment, I was a very happy camper with Cybersmart for 15 months (Dec'06-Feb'08) and this was the only issue I ever had, I still recommend them to most people (I was an IT store manager and my past haunts me )... for the rest I recommend AXXESS prepaid.

The difference is:

~ CYBERSMART is when your on a budget and you use your 3gigs

~ AXXESS prepaid is when you use 1-1.5GB per month. Also great when you get people using your ADSL - just tell them to pay you back with a voucher or 2. Would be great if Cybersmart made their top-ups more competitive.

From a support level Cybersmart makes it clear that they are cheap because you are not paying support costs for some nut who can't even switch his kettle on. If you want support, goto MWEB and cough up for being ignorant.

You are insulting me. Christ who do you think you are? I was refering to the total usage up and down do yoy think I'm dumb? I properly know more than you. Don't come and chip in to a story that doesn't concern you! Damm. I'm not stupid. You don't know what going on here so please don't give comments about something you know nothing of! I know my way around the internet well enought to make that statement!

How about you take a chill-pill, find some other way to let off that steam rather than attacking people on a forum (which, by the way, contain topics that do concern visitors/members to the forum), and re-read how I started my post off - by acknowledging it may be obvious to you, but with the intention of making sure that you considered it.

Sorry, I had not considered that you "properly" know more than I do. My bad.

Sorry If I was being rude I just felt insulted. Cause you are kinda dissing my intelligence. Sorry for being rude. I just saw red when you typed that. :)

Laurie just want to ask 1 more thing cause it cause lots of confusion even with the support center. Is the oneprice accounts shapped or unshapped? Acording to the website "DID YOU KNOW" it says our oneprice accounts are unshapped. But acording to support they say its shapped. Just want to know cause Skype,gaming,p2p is really slowed during peak times and from 7pm to about 10:30pm The internet is practically unusable. Thanks.

It's okay. As I said, I did not mean to insult. I just wanted to make sure, because using 1GB of bandwidth on a 699MB torrent isn't so unusual ;) As bandwidth starved South Africans, we should be given permission to leech only :D

Wait wait wait...Laurie im the sort of person that will not take B when I can get A. And everything you are saying is reasons for the problems. Now thats great, but tell me one thing: Why should we stay with you if we can get a more reliable(never had ANY of the problems mentioned here from any other ISP), cheaper, easier to get/cancell(most places have month to month, instant cancelation etc.), service from another ISP?
And also, you never answered my question about billing in my first comment(the start of the thread).
Thanks.

Well actually no, the first point is only true if you have a 384k line(maybe a 512, havent checked).
And then with a fast line it makes your second point void.

And about your last support point, MWEB actaully has pretty bad support. Well its not that its bad(they are quick to answer and to solve the standard questions), its just that they dont know anything besides the normal FAQ.
The best service and support ive had would be either axxess or webafrica(from being able to get an account at 2 oclock in the morning in about 3 minutes, to fixing whatever problem) - dammit axxess give me a job now :P -

EDIT: sorry for double posting, didnt realise this forum doesnt add ur post to the end of your old one :-/

I will add my cybersmart story.
We have been with them since the very beginning (when they took over from glolink) with a dial-up account. We called them to upgrade to an ADSL line but were told (3 weeks later) that our area is not able to get ADSL and that we should apply for Wi-Max instead. I checked our line on the Telkom website (took 15 seconds) and found that our line is in fact ADSL capable. So I phoned WebAfrica and ordered their one price offer and within 1 week the line was enabled and running.

Now when we phoned cybersmart (took them over 3 hours to answer the phone) to cancel our dial-up they said we need to give them 1 months notice but we don't have a contract with them. Can they ask notice even if we don't have a contract?

Their tracker isn't working or something. But they don't wanna listen.
At first I thought this was hog-wash (no offense), but it seems like there may be some truth in this matter. Yesterday, before leaving for work, I started downloading a patch for a game. Patch was 564MB (Armed Assault 1.05-1.08), got home and saw that I was capped (I haven't been capped in ages). So I checked the tracker.

According to the tracker, I used 0.71 GB. I started poking around; the days before I hardly used any bandwidth (meaning no spy-ware). I used Reget, which is a download manager, so no torrents (upload & download). I have my Windows automatic updates turned off, as I prefer to do this manually. The only thing I used my internet for the day was this download.

What I'd like to know is; where has this ~150mb mysteriously gone to? I wouldn't been fussed about it, if it was 0.61, but the fact remains there is ~100mb still unaccounted for. Reminds me of the banker who stole 1c from every transaction ...

From now on, I'm keeping an eagle-eye on my tracker.

You are lucky its only 150mb sometimes the tracker goes crazy and you loose up like 500+ mb. Its not much one 3GB account but count that together in like 3 months time you will be loosing a lot of gigs. GUYS if you are with cybersmart I'm telling you check your usage closely there is seriously something wrong with the usage tracker. :(

I know most people think I'm crazy. And the larger the download the more likely it become that the usage is incorrectly calculated. I wonder why though. But I was assured that its a problem on my side.

LaRoosTa; said:
I wonder if Laurie would care to comment on the accuracy of their usage tracker?

Would be intresting to see the comment.

Hell i don't care about the comment. I want it resolved! I have noticed this more and more lately. I download a 60 Mb file and suddenly 150mb is gone? Im too scared to download anything lately because i don't know whether my 200mb download will result in a 500mb "hap" out of my banwidth?

Im glad im not the only one experiencing this. I have also noticed this while using torrents, the total download(up and down) is always almost double(or feels that way) when i look at my apparent usage:mad:
