Cybersmart...:(

Yup, if you're line is only able to support 256kbps, you won't be able to upgrade any higher.

That being said, you must really be far from your exchange or have some truly horrible cables from the exchange to your house to only be able to get 256kbps =P
As I've said in the past Cybersmart ability to offer superb service is hampered by their business partner, Telkom, partner from hell!!!

I see. Is there any way for me to determine how far I am from the exchange? Where is the exchange located anyway, or is there more than 1 location?

I'm located in Strandfontein, so it's not to far from the Cape Town CBD (30 min drive).

Okay, it really sucks that I can only get 256kbps. But, being as stubborn as I am, I would really like to understand why.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is it really the raw distance from the telkom exchange that determines the line speed, or is it the number of landlines/ADSL lines that fall between my line and the telkom exchange that determines my ADSL speed?

I was thinking, imagine that you lived 20 km from the Telkom exchange, but your line was the only one connected to the exchange, would your line speed still be low? Or would it be the number of people connected to the Telkom exchange that makes your ADSL line slow?

My one and only grudge about Cybersmart is why they charge for the 30gb local.... other than that their Nightrider product and customer service is hard to beat.

Forgive my ignorance but 30gb local? That part of the cap saver feature?

No. CapSaver is an addon that saves your unused international cap for when you need it.

CapExtender is the addon that gives you local cap. But they only offer 0.5GB for R10, 3GB for R35, and 20GB for R74.

I heard some other ISP's offer free local cap if you open an account with them.

Can anyone name a few.

Apologies, I meant the CapExtender yes. Yeah look, as Fudzy pointed out, Cybersmart charge for local cap but Nightrider more than compensates, R25 for 15GB used between 1am-7.59am... good value... Telkom, mweb, offer free local don't they? What about openweb and webafrica?

The difference is, Cybersmart gives you a way to use the local BEFORE your international runs out.

No. You line should run directly to the exchange. The problem is noise on the line, and the longer the line is, the more noise you will have. Physical length isn't the real limit, but after 5km the line noise will most likely be enough to even make 192k a problem. If there's much less noise for some reason, you could go more than 5k.

Hi All

What is the point of all this if the connection speeds are K@K 90% of the time, disconnects become a way of browsing life and you are constantly having to start everything all over again!!

Oh, wait, I think I see it, at least then you will still have bandwidth left to look at 'cause Cybersmart is having issues again.

WHAT is up with them.. since Dec 24th, off and on again, speedy then sloooooooow. THEY insist there IS NO PROBLEM. Yesterday afternoon 20-40k, this morning 9k downloads and constant reload, reload, reload reload pages!!! Grrrr

ANY Cybersmart users out there having similar issues since the end of last month?

I have not had issues with Cybersmart at all. Do you think it could be your area? I live in Green Point, Cape Town and I have not had a single problem with them at all!

I must agree. Browsing has been any thing but enjoyable lately and while it won't solve your disconnect issues try using a down load manager (if you not already) so that you don't lose partially down loaded files when disconnected.

Orbit is supreme and it's free...

For any service related issues regarding Cybersmart may I suggest you email the MD Laurie Fialkov on [email protected]. She encourages this sort of feedback and she is very helpful...

Hi Sandmanm32

Yup, Orbit is wonderful, but does not help me with Rapidshare and Megaupload.... not a Premium account holder here.

The "workaround" for me is to find a torrent of the Rapidshare file and grab that!

Cybersmart insist there is NO problem. So, I guess it must all be me... and you. I have my brother's iBurst modem connected here and it is flying at 80k! Sigh. Perhaps look at Neotel or another ADSL provider if an email to CS MD does not yield anything.

As I have said... it has been all good with CS untill 24th Dec. K@K since then. Probably 1 day in 5 that yields acceptable service.

I'm currently down loading an Armin Van Buuren mp3 playlist off Rapidshare, roughly about 60gb in total so I'm compelled to purchase a Premium account. I then schedule down loads between the Nightrider time frames (1am-7.59am) and bobs your auntie, 15gb per month for an extra R25-00. The down load speeds at that time of the morning are well in excess of 400kBps

Not necessarily. This is what Laurie had to say...
There is no bandwidth at the moment , there is no other problem. Obviously there is less usage on the weekend and after hours (
it is way better on weekends than any other time). Bandwidth is not going to appear, either Telkom delivers it or it stays as it is until
they do. The only other option is to move onto a saix account as explained.
Not exactly the response I had hoped for unfortunately Cybersmart are in bed with hellkom so in effect so are their customers...

I share your frustration but I suspect it will improve in the not to distant future and if it doesn't, well Openweb, Webafrica etc etc

Do you find the disconnects prevalent after hours? Throughput should improve significantly after hours due to less activity on the networks...

Huh? That's R25 for local bandwidth though, do you use a proxy?

No, R25 is for Nightrider whereby you get 5 x your available cap to browse local or international. So if you have a 3gb account and you take Nightrider you could down load up to 15gb between 1am-7.59am local or international...

Let me get this straight, if sign up for the 25gb of local bandwidth it will go towards international bandwidth during the Nightrider period?
