Dashboard Cameras

And it records front and back at same time

Thats the only reason I bought it over the Prestigio. If I was you I would seriously consider looking into the Prestigio (and plonk it in as your front facing camera) because of the higher res front cam. There are quite a lot of actual vids on youtube so you can see it in action. It also pretty much costs the same as the Esquire version.

Looks like I might be leaning more towards the Prestigio one currently if the recording quality is better...

Will have to find the GPS model though, because that is a feature I would like to have.

It will be a bit better I'm just not sure if the difference will be massive though. The quality on the esquire one is actually quite good but you will definitely be unable to see numberplate's (but after looking at some pretigio vids it's still near impossible). The rear view camera IMHO is essential. You can see cars come up beside you which really helps create a better overall feel of what is/was going on. It's a tough choice.

EDIT: As for number plates.....just read them out loud....the units audio recorder is very good (a little too good IMHO :D) so you can just write it down later.

Rear view camera is pointless for me, it would be looking through 3 layers of glass, 2 of which are tinted quite heavily...

TBH, I'm not really looking for the camera as a visual record of my random drives, but more when I take the 4x4 off road.

So I'm thinking I will be starting with the Prestigio, and once I'm comfortable I will probably upgrade to a GoPro with GPS...

If that's the case then I think you're right. Just remember in the higher price brackets there should be better options than a go pro unless you want to mount it on other things as well.

Yeah,

I do like the idea of mounting a Go Pro in odd locations on the vehicle though, could get some interesting shots.

So what's out there now?

Not had any luck finding anything on Esquire's online store.
Don't seem to be doing it anymore or as I often find, navigation and finding what you're after is a mission :erm:

A quick search on pricecheck gives up loads of CarJoy aka Chinese "cheapies"

I'm looking for something sub R1k - mostly for rogue damned cops and then wanna upload to youtube.
Also for the ****ey drivers out there, but I've become quite defensive - but it'd be a nice to have in case of any disputes.

Do any of these dash cams have the capability to upload footage of last X seconds at the push of a button via cellular network?
It's all good and well capturing someone with road rage or a cop soliciting a bride but if he/she confiscates the camera or memory card then it's as good as useless.

None that I can find, even expensive/high-end ones. Hell, it's not even common in phone-based (that, you know, actually HAVE SIM cards) - I've managed to find all of ...one: AutoGuard Blackbox, whose "site" is *spit* faceache. Features from the Play Store:
Key Features
- (Pro) Background recording: Multitasking with other apps (like navigation)

I've been using this for months, excellent app. Haven't tried the auto upload to youtube though. Quality is excellent and the background recording option is great. Running it on a S3.

Wow, progress - an actual endorsement! :p ...but now you know you're (forum) honour-bound to test it out and answer the question for us? :D

Well, just tested the auto upload, works fine. Not suitable for SA though as the files tend to get big (360mb per 10min clip on my settings, 1080p, 5000kb/s, sound). I really like to capture in high quality. :p It uploaded via wifi, but on the road data usage is going to kill you if you auto upload.
