Dashboard Cameras

I bought a DVR (207 I think) recently on eBay. Picked the cheapest one for R440 - not a lot to lose if it turned out to be crap. Haven't had any issues with it yet. Quality is quite good.

Nice feedback so I shouldn't be disappointed and how long can you record for?

It's a purpose built dash cam, so it does looping where it overwrites the oldest file, auto on/off, connects to 12V socket etc.

I checked out some of the footage on Youtube taken with this camera and read a review and I'm impressed.
I'm actually having thoughts about using this as a cheap alternative to action cameras (like the R3000+ GoPro's).
Battery life was around 1.5 hours according to one of the reviews which is plenty for some action shots and for the price of an one entry level GoPro 3 I can purchase three of these.
The only downside appears to be the 3 to 5 minute video clip length. I can't find out if the video will be seamless if the clips are stitched together or if there will be "gaps" between the clips.

I actually prefer the smaller clip sizes, makes for easier uploading. They can always be stitched together if needed. Not sure if there is a gap between clips, haven't come across a review that mentioned it yet.

Was also going to go for a GoPro but I can't justify the cost. One reviewer managed to get ~8 hours on the battery by changing a few settings, such as setting the screen to auto turn off.

Btw. Some screencaps from the DVR207 in various conditions. For it's intended purpose it's adequate.

I ordered the one above from Takealot. Will give feedback once I've tested it. Only delivered on 26/09/2013 though. If it's crap it will not bee too much money down the drain

You get what you pay for :)

Rather look at the one I posted earlier for a better combination of price and performance. Reviews are generally favourable.

That looks more appealing. A little more but not ridiculous, and you sound happy with it?

I haven't got it yet, but probably going to fork out for it at the end of the month after reading a few tech reviews.

I was initially going to go for a GoPro White but couldn't justify the price - and it didn't have features that dedicated dashcams did such as motion detection (great for parking lots), being able to wire it directly to a 12V source, etc.

The only thing that I'm a bit nervous about is that, judging by the pics, I'm not sure how well I'd be able to mount it behind the rear view mirror so that it stays hidden. But that's a minor issue which I'll sort out later on.

I'll have to check on my eBay account. It starts recording when its plugged into the 12v socket and stops when you switch off the car.

Not sure about nighttime conditions. Haven't used it yet at night, but it probably sucks. :-)
