Dashboard Cameras

GoPro is great, but insanely expensice and not meant as a dash cam unless you plan on only recording a "single event" like track day or something... look at these:

Otherwise on dx.com you can get them for next to nothing but takes a month to get to you :)

Thank you for the links. Appreciate it.

You want a DASHcam and your first thought is GoPro?

They are POV action cameras, you can use them as dash cameras in a pinch but that is definitely not what they are intended for. If you're into EXXXTREME sports like snowboarding, skydiving or motocross they're great, or even if you go hiking in the mountains or something. They are poor dash cams because to mount them on anything they need to be in the housing which usually means you can't charge them, and they have a ridiculously short battery life.

They are expensive, but once again in one-brand-only SA, the cheaper and better alternatives aren't available apart from maybe the Ion Pros if you're lucky.

Anyways, look at car places for dedicated dashcams, some record forwards and backwards too.

GoPro was his first choice because of the popularity of the product (without doing his research on the product properly ofcourse) and the sometimes outdoorsy stuff we do.

Thanks for the link! Read through it all.

For a GoPro type camera, look at the SJCAM SJ4000 here. Basically a GoPro knockoff, same size and features. Lots of reviews on Youtube, quality seems good. It has a dashcam function where it loop records in 1,5 or 10 minute intervals. It also comes with a lot of mounts. And it costs about R1000. I am planning to get one of these, but not for a dashcam.

The SJCAM seems pretty good for its price.

I have one of these http://www.eyedrive.co.za/index.php...t-deals/ed0600-mini-camera-bundle-deal-detail
Video quality isn't super amazing but for R700 it is great. Think in the future I will buy a better one. This little one's build quality shows in the price, its not a premium product but has been recording the streets of PTA for a couple of months now, no problems beyond the occasional restart and screen freeze.

@OP i really recommend http://www.eyedrive.co.za/ Had no problems with them. Whats nice about them, is you don't have to wait months/weeks for it to get delivered from China, as they keep their stock local and courier it to you.

Thanks for the links - really good stuff.

Best & cheapest dash cam set up I ever owned was my old iPhone 4s, windshield suction mount, phone's car charger & the Witness app. That app is the bomb. It showed the usual date, time & speed, but also the GPS coordinates and g-forces, haha. Here's a UK guy's compilation of some things he's caught out on the road using the app:

An advantage of a phone over a dedicated dash cam is you can can quickly email pictures or short clips to yourself, the cloud or your social media, before the gendarmerie or thugs smash your phone. I think everything cost me less R150, because I already had the phone. The video quality is great HD as well. I think it's ridiculous to buy any sub HD camera these days when your existing phone can take excellent videos. I'd stay away from those cheaper cams that need interpolation to get decent quality videos. I mean the vids should be crisp enough that you can catch details like number plates, maybe people's faces etc.

"Does not ship to South Africa".

Where did you get yours?

Probably eBay as well. I think he just did a search there & posted the first link. Lots of sellers there ship to SA, incl for free:

New Techmoan dashcam review. It costs a pretty penny but does bring a lot to the party. The highlights here are
  • front and rear camera-ONLY modules, both in full-HD; 3m cable for the front cam, 6m for the rear.
  • a GPS antenna
  • a, well, panic button cable
  • the *separate* recorder unit that allows for the actual cameras to be really dink. It takes 64GB class 6 SDHC (one Amazon reviewer claims a 128GB without problems) and synchronises the cam files. And has an internal Li-ion battery to boot.
  • The only potential downer (YMMV) is that it's ...not great at recording audio.

Interesting. I need to get one of these...but one that doesn't record my speed

I did quite a bit of research and went with the Mini 0806, records HD with dual slots for memory cards. GPS option. Easy mounting and the cam just slides out of the slot if you wish to remove.
Imported 2 for mine and wife's car. Not the cheapest models but the quality of image and night vision is excellent also very wide angle recording. The best part is its small and hides nicely behind the rear view mirror.
