GoPro is great, but insanely expensice and not meant as a dash cam unless you plan on only recording a "single event" like track day or something... look at these:

Otherwise on dx.com you can get them for next to nothing but takes a month to get to you![]()
Thank you for the links. Appreciate it.
You want a DASHcam and your first thought is GoPro?
They are POV action cameras, you can use them as dash cameras in a pinch but that is definitely not what they are intended for. If you're into EXXXTREME sports like snowboarding, skydiving or motocross they're great, or even if you go hiking in the mountains or something. They are poor dash cams because to mount them on anything they need to be in the housing which usually means you can't charge them, and they have a ridiculously short battery life.
They are expensive, but once again in one-brand-only SA, the cheaper and better alternatives aren't available apart from maybe the Ion Pros if you're lucky.
Anyways, look at car places for dedicated dashcams, some record forwards and backwards too.
GoPro was his first choice because of the popularity of the product (without doing his research on the product properly ofcourse) and the sometimes outdoorsy stuff we do.
Thanks for the link! Read through it all.
For a GoPro type camera, look at the SJCAM SJ4000 here. Basically a GoPro knockoff, same size and features. Lots of reviews on Youtube, quality seems good. It has a dashcam function where it loop records in 1,5 or 10 minute intervals. It also comes with a lot of mounts. And it costs about R1000. I am planning to get one of these, but not for a dashcam.
The SJCAM seems pretty good for its price.
I have one of these http://www.eyedrive.co.za/index.php...t-deals/ed0600-mini-camera-bundle-deal-detail
Video quality isn't super amazing but for R700 it is great. Think in the future I will buy a better one. This little one's build quality shows in the price, its not a premium product but has been recording the streets of PTA for a couple of months now, no problems beyond the occasional restart and screen freeze.
@OP i really recommend http://www.eyedrive.co.za/ Had no problems with them. Whats nice about them, is you don't have to wait months/weeks for it to get delivered from China, as they keep their stock local and courier it to you.
Thanks for the links - really good stuff.
