Hi

I used to only get the 2+1GB special once a month when i used my 8ta sim card in my modem. Now it has suddenly increased to 2-3 times a month once i put the sim in my phone and i am using it as the modem and a everyday phone.

So i decided to do some investigation into why my data usage has increased so much, i bought a 2+1GB data bundle on Tuesday because i had a data heavy project that i had to do, and i decided to actively monitor the data usage using 3 programs, i used Bitmeter 2 (Windows), NetSpeed Monitor (Windows) and PdaNet (Android). I have been monitoring each session by taking notes of the usage after every data using session and now my bundle has 40MB left. I did not include night data in the traffic monitors, 11pm-5am.

The 3 programs came up with the the total of 1461MB, this was calculated by taking the 3 programs totals and getting the average, the 3 different programs had a total data usage range of 23MB. This is a step away from the 2048MB data that i was supposedly allocated. I also turned off mostly all my programs on my phone except for the pdanet usb tether, that includes watsapp, facebook, bbm, browser etc. Now i'm sitting here with 40MB in my account after i just monitored a session of 43MB of data usage straight after the 98MB data usage message.

Now can someone explain where my 550MB went?? the only logical explination i have found is that my night usage is being counted towards my day usage.

tl:dr - Missing 550Mb of data from the 2+1GB bundle, seeking an explination

Hi Djinnes.
Experiencing almost identical situation with my 8ta sim also using the 2+1GB special .
Very Frustrating !!! yet there mere thought of actually having to call telkom mobile support & try and explain this issue is causing me heart plapatations.
Please post any progress with resolving this problem.
Thanx

I will be sure to post any progress, there has been no word from the telkom support or the telkom person who roams these forums, at least i know now it's not just me.

I reverted to using Networx monitor on Windows and using SNMP to monitor my traffic through the pppoe connection of the router instead of monitoring on different devices. Shows me in real-time what data traffic is going through my router and logs all usage by day, week, month, session etc.

Far more efficient in my limited experience so far...

I also got telkom LTE 10 days ago and within one week it was showing I had utilised 3.5gb.

I immediately bought another 1gb assuming i had missed something. I also got two apps to track my usage on my laptop. i then closed all apps and monitored it. I used up 1gb in just 3 days despite never using youtube or any other heavy usage applications.

When i called telkom they say that LTE uses more data... but that is not true... if you go on google, and read news, how can you use more data....? they seem to be charging for time and not actual data..

Same here, started late this week. High traffic 1mb/s-10mb/s just after connection is made.I thought it was malware though

You are 100% right .

I have the same problem , 10th of the month and my data bundle has been used already .
I have not been at home and have just returned from an overseas business trip and my
kids say they have not been using my LTE connection:(http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/images/smilies/frown.gif
So what is the real answer to this issue , because in my mind we are being ripped off , and dealing with
Telkom is a nightmare , cannot add more data today because they are closedhttp://mybroadband.co.za/vb/images/smilies/sick.gif

I am also experiencing high data usage.1.5gb in 3 days.Last night my router was off but my on my telkom usage stats it indicates that Inused 200mb??
How can that be Telkom..

Exactly the same problem here. Magically blew through my 10GB cap within the first two weeks of July! That's never happened in the past 4 years or so, so I'd agree something very weird with Telkom this month. Looking forward to my refund when you find the problem Telkom...

I am having the same problem. I have bought a Telkom LTE 10 GB Day time & 10 GB Night Time with a Hauwei B593 Router bundle. Within two weeks both bundles exhausted. I am 63 years old and don't surf at night! Most of the use was when I was not at home as I live in JHB during the week and only spend 3 days a week at my home in Hartbeespoort. I have resorted to switching the unit on for the short period of use and then switching off again.Could someone have hacked my computer or the modem? The password is coded on the back of the router?

Data seems to fly ever since the "All network" data bundles came into play.
Service levels have dropped and MTN is none the better.

Sad times...

I have had precisely the same problem since purchasing my LTE contract in Dec last year. So much so that I tried to cancel, and was told I would have to pay a cancellation fee of over R2000. I have run out of cap frequently (and use my connection mostly for work, and don't download music or movies or any other high data items). I have purchased an additional 2GB whenever I run out (and it is not cheap) and on two occasions, I purchased, closed down the laptop, restarted next morning and logged on and was out of cap! How can that be? Is there nothing we can all do? Take up a class action against Telkom or something?

Exact same thing happening to me. I bought a 10GB bundle R499 this morning. Went out and came back to see 8GB left.

WHAT the HELL is going on here??

Everytime I speak to an assistant via 081180, all they say is turn off your modem when not in use???

......
Can a 8ta representitive PLEASE look up on this matter

I'm having massive TELKOM LTE issues. I had to top up 6 times in August, and that's using the 50GB bundle.

I had to top up twice yesterday and collectively, 750MB was used in 12 hrs. We haven't streamed anything for 2 weeks yet it continues. I topped up at 22:10 with 500MB, and it ran out in 30mins. All I was doing was FTP'ing small HTML files. It's driving me mad.

Telkom say the same thing - how many devices are connected and do you switch the modem off?

It's ridiculous. I didn't have any of these issues with my previous WISP service provider, so it's clearly a Telkom issue. It's taken a week since I logged a complaint without response.

Common denominator seems to be LTE.

Do you guys get the same issue when forcing 3G connectivity instead of LTE on your devices?

I have posted similar post on a different thread. "Telkom data theft" See below message on from that thread. Sorry for hijacking your thread.

Has anyone lately come across that extra data has been taken off there internet data. I've have been with Telkom for 1.5 years on a 10gig + 10gig contract and had no problems regarding my data usage. On my 10gig day surfer I will still have some data left by the 25th of every month on a average. This month, by the 13/08/2015 all my 10gig day data has already been used up. On Saturday morning 00h01 (midnight data) I started to downloaded an 864 meg file. On 50% completed it showed on my Telkom dongle I have download 650 meg already. At the end it took 1.3gig of data on a 864 file. I have nothing else running, no other web sides open, only the file I downloaded. Something fishy going on here. Is Telkom taking more actual data off? Or maybe I'm loosing data somewhere else?

I did log a complaint with Telkom and they will come back to me in the next 24 hours.

Can somebody assist me with this problem. What can be done to prevent me from loosing data so quickly.

Telkom contacted me and said because I'm downloading from a torrent link, other people are also downloading/taking from my data. Yes I agree, but this data is uploaded data that's taken from me, not the bloody downloaded data. I told him this and he still did not understand what I saying. Am I'm right about this? That same morning when 1.3gig was taken from me, over 200 megs of uploaded was taken as well. Uploaded data I don't have an issue with. Telkom now says there nothing they can do. It's fine to have a good price structure for customers, but do not steel from customers. Is it possible for a provider to force the system to take off almost double the amount of data from customers? If a Telkom rep could read this thread as well and respond.

My dongle resets daily to zero. When I started to download from midnight my usage showed 0. After the file (864 meg) was downloaded, it showed I have downloaded 1.3gig.

The big question is did you monitor your downloads only or downloads and uploads because both are monitored separately, but accounts for the bandwith used.

A lot of ppl always miss the uploads and only focus on downloads, but as soon as your connected to the internet you will be sending and receiving packets which will all count towards your bandwith usage but shown separate as download and upload.

Rest of the ppl be vary of Dos attacks that can cause you to loose data and with speeds on 3g and 4g thats in the 20MB ranges eating 50gb of bandwith is not that hard to do.

My data usage has also been incredibly high the last two months. Using 3G, not LTE. This was after buying an all network data bundle, maybe that's the issue.

I monitored my usage using Windows 8's built in connection monitor, and it turns out I was actually using a huge amount of data, even opening a simple website used a lot. Then I noticed that, with Firefox, data just kept being used, even when I had stopped browsing. Been using Chrome since then and uninstalled Firefox and no such trouble since, now data usage stops as soon as I stop browsing. Will keep monitoring to see if that was the issue.
