What is the best method when in Italy to use data, unfortunately I'm not expecting to find any wireless hotspots in the area, so my cell will be my data connection.

Do bundles work?
What are the costs?
Recommendations?

Its expensive dude.

Vodacom charges from R17.50 per meg (if on a vodaphone network) and R79.03 per meg with another network.

I dont think your data bundles will apply.

Local sim cards are sometimes an option. But from my travel experience, prepaid sim cards do not offer data services overseas. But best confirm that for Italy.

:eek::eek:

Will have to look into a local sim, or really watch the usage! Thanks for the info.

Be careful man, rather get a sim there. I made the mistake of using my cell for data while overseas, which I could swear probably totaled no more than 10-15MB. Got home to a nice extra R350 on my bill. This was with MTN though, I'm sure that Vodacom wouldn't be much different.

local sims with a data plan will be brilliant if they offer something like that. but if u got a data card make sure that it is not network locked

We're there for 5 weeks
Confirmed on Vodacom site that its R17.50 per MB billed in 10kb increments.
We're staying in a small farming town. Doubt there will be any hotspots around. Local sim may be only *real* option.

I travelled through Europe on a Virgin UK pre-paid SIM. In a month I got away with 5 pounds worth of airtime using it only for email (text) and a small amount of browsing. You may however be better of with something from Italy if you are only going to be there for the duration of your stay.

I was there last year. A sim card costs 10 euros, but its not like buying a starter pack. You need to register, have a copy of your passport, details where you staying etc. It includes airtime.

Recharging was a schlep. You need to phone a number, listen to Italian, enter your cell phone number, and then enter your recharge voucher. No quick punch in codes. Always had to ask hotel receptionist to help.

BTW. This was for vodafone

Here is some more information. Just click the relevant prepaid offers for the various operators and scroll down to find the data rates. The information about obtaining a Codice Fiscale is at the bottom of the page.

Italy has many WI-FI hot spots mate, trust me take your notebook with you, you'll find various open WI-FI hot spots at the Restaurants.

Not in Rovasenda! We're taking the laptop anyway, so if there are - thats cool. We're lucky to have electricity ;)

Having a shower is frowned upon.
Using the light is out of the question!
Flushing the toilet - don't go there!

Sorry? Who's 3rd world? :D
