So to everyone supporting the death penalty (by whatever means) - would you change your mind if you were falsely accused of murder and sitting on death row?
Of course they'd mind, but the fact remains due process needs to be followed. If you are falsely accused of murder, you would rely on your legal representatives to get you off. If they don't, then in a system that's designed to be to the benefit of the accused (which is in fact the way South African law works), they're either useless or you shouldn't be representing yourself. If there is a death penalty system, there is usually even
more of a process to try and determine absolute guilt and be 100% sure. In the past, some innocent people have slipped through the cracks, sure, but with the advancement made in technology and forensics, such errors can be eradicated. It is due to these advancements that so many people get acquitted of crimes today - as police investigation has not quite kept pace with science.
I believe we have many candidates for the death penalty in this country, a prime example being
Ananias Mathe. He is beyond ever being rehabilitated. Leigh Matthews' murderer is another.
The prime purpose of the death penalty is not to punish the criminal, but to remove them from society and ensuring they cannot corrupt others, while making sure they do not repeat their heinous crimes. It is also used as a dissuasion factor to prevent criminals from killing other people. It may not be successful in the latter instance, but in the first, it's finitely successful. I mean. dead criminals won't kill or rape ever again.
To take the moral high ground on this contentious issue is all good and well, but let's face facts here: the current situation is dire. There are between 15 and 20 murders happening in this country daily - and twice more attempted murders. There are 20 times that in the number of rapes a day. We have amongst the highest incidences of child abuse and one of the worst rates of organised robbery in the world. Kidnapping, murder, violent armed robbery - we are living at the mercy of criminals. These very same criminals do not care about taking a life or several to obtain their goals, yet we have people in our society willing to stake their morality on ensuring these people do not lose their lives. Wow.
