Death Penalty

As said. Sorry for the one, show empathy and Honor his death as well as compensate the family. Look at it as in war one death save thousands more. Small feat but still better than the alternatives ie. high crime and murders.

So you would be happy to nominate one of your loved ones to become a martyr in the name of the death penalty?

Part of the constitution should read that if you take away the rights of another person by theft, rape murder or any other means then automatically you loose your own right to humanity. There should be no human rights for criminals. They should be abolished and taken away. the death penalty Ala Iraqi style must be the favorite means. The Western/USA way takes too long.

Sorry if this is a little off the core topic but your post promps me to ask again. (Have asked before elsewhere but never got any answer). Can anyone explain to me exactly what a Human Right is? How is it defined? Who issues them and just how many of them are there? I'm serious.

You could probably start a new thread with those questions and is likely to derail this thread.

I say through them into a Saw-style needle pit, with the needles as a kind donation from the Imizanu Yethu HIV Clinic ;)

Im against the death penalty because if an innocent person goes to jail then that person can be freed but if that person where executed what then?

If the problem is that people are not getting caught, then the death penalty is no fix. If the problem is that people are not getting convicted, then the death penalty is no fix. If the problem is that people are getting inadequate sentences, then the death penalty is no fix.

Cases eligible for the death penalty will also be longer and much more expensive. The state will without question have to provide anyone facing the possibility of the death penalty the best lawyers available, at state expense. Unless laws exist or are passed whereby they can compel the best to do the work for free.

I'd also expect those involved in prosecuting these cases, providing forensic evidence and witnesses to be held criminally liable when a false conviction has occurred. If there is any deliberate deception or they deliberately ignored contrary evidence to get a conviction, as happens in the US, they themselves should be subject to the death penalty.

If the death penalty is a deterrent why is it so in some countries, but not required at all in others? Would it be a deterrent in South Africa?

As for ways to kill people, decapitation is probably a good option.

A better option is to execute a handful of those who are willing to kill innocent people, i.e. those who support the death penalty knowing that some innocent people will be caught in the net. And hand their assets over to the family of the individual who was executed in error.

Only you can come up with such a scheme, that is surely what is happening daily in the news but i assume that is not what you meant. If you are happy with the current situation then its your choice. We are discussing the merits of the death penalty and your analogy missed the boat let alone the thread topic

Execution for having an opinion? I am not sure how easy that will be to sell to the public.

So what you mean is we should scrap the death penalty for criminals but execute those who believe the death penalty is good. Then share the executed's wealth amongst the family of a person wrongfully convicted and put to death by a system that doesnt exist. OK, I think I got it :D

Not one of the offenders executed for a crime has ever repeated the offense - so yeah, I think it deters them from doing it again.

Neither has a life without parole inmate. Well except towards other inmates, and I couldnt care less about them. Oh and the guards (their drug dealers).

You forgot about those unjust pardons a few years back? Yeah I am sure. Also violent crimes and rapes is rising, Jails are full, money is gone, so what is the solution. Just let it be? More of the same? A sad situation specially when you read this.

So to everyone supporting the death penalty (by whatever means) - would you change your mind if you were falsely accused of murder and sitting on death row?
Of course they'd mind, but the fact remains due process needs to be followed. If you are falsely accused of murder, you would rely on your legal representatives to get you off. If they don't, then in a system that's designed to be to the benefit of the accused (which is in fact the way South African law works), they're either useless or you shouldn't be representing yourself. If there is a death penalty system, there is usually even more of a process to try and determine absolute guilt and be 100% sure. In the past, some innocent people have slipped through the cracks, sure, but with the advancement made in technology and forensics, such errors can be eradicated. It is due to these advancements that so many people get acquitted of crimes today - as police investigation has not quite kept pace with science.

I believe we have many candidates for the death penalty in this country, a prime example being Ananias Mathe. He is beyond ever being rehabilitated. Leigh Matthews' murderer is another.

The prime purpose of the death penalty is not to punish the criminal, but to remove them from society and ensuring they cannot corrupt others, while making sure they do not repeat their heinous crimes. It is also used as a dissuasion factor to prevent criminals from killing other people. It may not be successful in the latter instance, but in the first, it's finitely successful. I mean. dead criminals won't kill or rape ever again.

To take the moral high ground on this contentious issue is all good and well, but let's face facts here: the current situation is dire. There are between 15 and 20 murders happening in this country daily - and twice more attempted murders. There are 20 times that in the number of rapes a day. We have amongst the highest incidences of child abuse and one of the worst rates of organised robbery in the world. Kidnapping, murder, violent armed robbery - we are living at the mercy of criminals. These very same criminals do not care about taking a life or several to obtain their goals, yet we have people in our society willing to stake their morality on ensuring these people do not lose their lives. Wow.

Sounds great if it works as advertised.

However, the 2nd ingredient can negate the effects of the anaesthesia, and because it's a paralytic the person executed can be in excruciating pain while also being totally paralysed.

Doesn't sound very humane to me...

Were the criminal's victims treated humanely? Usually not! I think we've taken human rights too far. If you kill or rape you forfeit any rights you may have had before committing the crime. Hang them all! Publically would be good!

Just another convenient translation to suit our purposes.

We show that killing is wrong by killing.

What a brilliant idea.

Please provide proof that the death penalty or the threat thereof reduces crime.

If the criminal is dead he cannot become a repeat offender!

It seems to me that our legal system is borked. Criminals are being released on bail to go out and commit further violent crimes. Sentences are too soft and when only part of said sentence has been served criminals are released back into society to go out and rape and murder again. This has happened too often in too many countries for it to be ignored.

If you remove them from the equation PERMANENTLY then they cannot do it again.

DEATH PENALTY =

1) THE GUY IS DEAD
2) MORE FOOD AVIAL FOR PEOPLE IN NEED
3) MORE SPACE IN PRISONS
4) LESS INFRASTRUCTURE TO BUILD
5) MORE FREEDOM
6) LESS CRIME
