Deep cycle batteries.

now that i have the Mecer 2400va with Backup power.. i don't get any loadshedding at all. (that figures)

Hi guys, how do you work out battery bank size?
For example, 4 x 12v 100ah or 8 x 6v 200ah? ...

Thanks

If you are looking for good gel vrla batteries with a warrantee of 14 years I have a couple I want to sell for 3500 each

Add up the Ah of each battery. 4 x 100Ah = 400ah capacity. Or do you mean how to determine how many batteries you will need for your system?

Freedomwon sounds cheaper.
Yeah but still pricey.

If I am reading the specs right the smallest one is 100Ah @ 51V for
R34761 (excl.)
If we normalise that to 12V for comparing with regular batteries that is, ~425Ah @ 12V or R35.41/Ah (excl.)

In comparison lead acid seems to be about ~R1400 or so for 105Ah or R13.33/Ah however because you shouldn't discharge them more than 50% ideally even less while LiFiPo4 is Up to 80% DoD we should double this for comparison purposes, so R26.66/Ah

(Above is probably an over simplification, if somebody with more knowledge on batteries wants to chime in with a better comparison it would be appreciate)

Considering some of the other benefits Lithium brings to the table, ability to provide more immediate Amps when needed, faster charging, smaller, much longer theoretical lifetime etc. this is I admit close enough to be tempting, however it is simply a much bigger battery bank than I require - I'm looking more in the 200Ah/12v region (lead acid) or 100Ah/12v maybe 200 at a stretch region (LiFePo4).

If I had the money and were in the market for a bank of that size I must admit I would be tempted, so I will be watching how things unfold carefully for future as in future I may want a much bigger system if I am happy with my initial small test system and come into some spare money :)

But I suppose the cheapest will be to import the gear yourself.
I suspect with the right supplier and import knowledge that may be true for a large enough quantity, for a small quantity it is probably not feasible.

Or a group buy.
That would be ideal, however it needs someone with the right knowledge to run it, the previous group buy offer seemingly had such a person but seems to have fallen apart or something.

It is possible that it is just not a feasible option yet (except if you are going for a very large system).

Best batteries to buy are gel batteries, I am getting a 10KW solar system installed next week, have been doing research for nearly 3 years on the whole solar power idea.

Can you get a decent lead acid for that price? The ones I have seen in that price range, either do not have cycle info or are more meant to be used as the traditional UPS battery that sits most of its life being float charged and only occasionally being asked to do some work. If you start to use them in a daily cycle they will not last long. The decent ones I have seen are 1.5 to 2 times that price.

A little bit of learning here as far as batteries go: http://www.otherpower.com/off-grid-battery-guide

Honestly I'm not yet sure, still doing my homework on the lead acid side of things.
I was hoping to find a better non lead acid alternative so I didn't want to spend too much time looking at lead acid without first seeing if there is something better (So above is just a ballpark figure)

Too bad the Freedomwon people don't have smaller packs, maybe I'll try contact them anyway perhaps they are willing to sell the cells separately or something.

so of the 2 options, 6v 200ah is better ie as the battery bank is larger?

No, they both provide the same amount of watts (Volts*Amps) per hour, which is what matters at the end of the day so 6V 200A and 12V 100A are equivalent in terms of capacity.

To determine which is 'better' of the two you would have to consider other factors:
Quality of the batteries.
How many cycles they can last at what depth of discharge.
Size of the batteries.
Price.
The voltage of the load you need to power.

Or wait I may have read you wrong.
Is that 8 * (6v 200Ah) or 8 * (6v) 200 Ah

If it is the first one than the 6v array is of course double the watts as thehuman has shown above.
