Differences between Macs and PCs

Peter my point is you drop 36k on a pc and then need to drop another 3k on a vga card so the grand total is not 39k for a 4870 machine LOL

Nobody is saying the mac is useless we are saying 36k for a mac is crazy money with a 9500gt and 39k for a mac with a 4870 is even worse.

For 36k they could atleast include a higher end card LOL

The arguments are not about you, this guy is saying a Mac is worthless because the GPU is not up to scratch - he defines his 'worthiness' metric by the ability to play Crysis - which I countered by saying I can alsp plonk in a R3K ATI 4870 - but that's not really the point. I'm arguing in that context. He considers a machine only worthy if it can play Crysis - if it can't play it as well as his gamer machine - then that machine is worthless. I'm responding by saying that its not a machine for gamers and even a high end Quadro won't be fast in games but it is possible for Mac users to pay R3K and get an ATI 4870.

This has nothing to do with you. I am very aware that a person can make money on a 386 and lots of it - one just doesn't often make money playing games on a high end gamer card. :)

I understood it as such, I am merely pointing out that the "You just play games" was an unwarranted assumption and provided an example which may very well apply to him. I am not confirming nor refuting any of the points you nor he have made. In fact I have no inclination to join the whole PC vs Mac debate, I'm just going to help out with facts as far as I can :)

the dual CPUs in that Mac Pro are faster than what's available for desktop use.

ever heard of a skulltrail?

pc's will still be the fastest, and 35k will buy you a skulltrail

But that's what he said. He doesn't care about the reasons people spend R36K on a machine for - it's not for games - I assume he knows this - but he repeats the same thing over and over like a broken record. It makes me think that he considers playing Crysis the summit of his PC usage - the most important thing for his computer. I'm offended that you despite seeing this think that I would attack you or anyone else. I don't do that. I don't attack people - I'm just replying to this guy and it seems I'm wasting my time.

He boats his PC can play many more games than a Mac.
But his PC can only play games because it has a very expensive GPU (most home pcs don't have), and it still can't play console games the likes of Eternal Sonata (now a dated title).

He boats and says a Mac Pro has a junk card - but a Mac Pro is not a gaming machine. A R45K Nvidia Quadro GPU would also be a junk card by his metric because his gamer card will also outperform that card in games.
Finally I said I can also pay R3K and plonk in an Nvidia 4870 and get virtually the same GPU as he has to play games if I really, really want to.

And I can also buy a lousy i7 PC and two 5870s and play Crysis in 120fps. Who really cares. I don't do it because that's not my passion or hobby. A Mac Pro can easily become a gaming machine - it is a decent gaming machine out of the box already - but I can plonk a 4870 in as well - so what. :) It's cheaper to buy a dedicated PC to play only games - point is that I can even Crysis in lower res than he, but he can't run any of the Mac apps I can. With a cheap upgrade I can play Crysis as fast or even faster than him. But Macs are not mostly about gaming. Neither are PCs because PCs can't play console games. PCs are mosly about 'some FPS gaming'. PCs are almost as bad as Macs in the variety of games out there for them, and Macs also have dedicated Mac OSX games too. ;)

I think I said enough. G'night guys. :)

the Quadro does Workstation CAD Graphics
The 4870 plays games at high resolutions

....

the 9500gt does none of those......what's your point?

Sigh, another assumption. I do not think that you will start attacking posters, I merely made a prediction that sooner or later this thread will turn south, be it a passing troll posting and starting a fight or by rabid fanboys defending their platform to the death.

He most certainly does hold the ability to play games in high regard from what I can tell, but the point I've been repeatedly trying to make is that, despite this, you cannot make the assumption that it is all he uses his PC for, or all he does, even if he keeps harping on about it. That's really the only point I'm making.

I use my GPU for Folding@Home, personally :p

I use both platforms. Remember it's not me who started this but I think overall I killed every argument Killa has made.

That's the point of contention. He says a Mac Pro is worthless because it can't play games. I told him a Mac Pro is a workstation people use to make money not play games - one can if one wants to - heck I played Quake4 on mine back in 2006 (Mac OSX version too). In 30 inches it looks beautiful.

He is arguing that gaming is more important than making money. That's him not me.

I don't use it for anything as noble but turn it off to save electrons :).

How have you killed our argument peter?

Explain why i would spend 36k on a mac when i could buy a nice pc with a big vga card. I can run any application for video editing, photo editing, games etc all on one cheaper platform.

Just tell me what a mac does that a pc cannot? apart from some gay game, explain why mac people can thousands but not pc people when majority of apps are available on both platforms and pc actually has far more programs than mac.

Peter, if you want to work on say, CAD, to do some "work".....would it be better to drop 35k on an iMac with a 9500gt or a R5000 PC with a R30,000 Quadro card?

tweenies eh?

Support for 2 CPU's and 4 GFX Cards, be it either nVidia OR ATI

intel_skulltrail.jpg

YES. People get excited over the hardware to play the same games with the same gameplay - go out and shoot up some terrorists/hostage takers/gangsters/civilians/aliens/monsters. Will that rig add to the storyline or make the game more intriguing? No-- it just adds eye-candy.

At the end of that day all that is is a very expensive TOY. A Mac Pro is a workhorse and its expensive but it gets its work done with least stress to the user so he can go off with his woma(e)n and his sportscar and enjoy the good things in life :) or go and play games on his PC (even a SkullTrail whateva). :)

Not everyone works on CAD. There are alternative solutions to CAD too, not just on Windows.

But to run a high end CAD rig you'll need dual core Xeons too probably with lots of ECC RAM and a dual CPU motherboard. That will cost you more than R5K. And that R30K (Sybaritic has them for R45k) Quadro will be as worthless at games as the 9500gt.

Actually skulltrail is not for gaming at all considering games do not use more than 3 cores WTF is the point of an 8 core system for gaming peter?

Skull trail is basically what you get in a mac pro, considering they use intel it is more than likely a version of skull trail that intel change slightly to incorporate into the mac pro. You know mac uses intel now right?

but which would be better for my CAD business?

i'm on the lookout for a new sports car so I too can impress the ladies, so I only have 35k unfortunately

Night peter make sure your mac is unplugged before you bonk it :D.

You know that one night we spent together, had me thinking you could come over to my place again? (Serious now). I'll send you a PM. Please respond in the same way as last time.

I dunno - do you want to play games on your PC? or do you need the Quadro?

slightly? slightly?

nah, they wouldn't use a mobo with 4 x PCI express slots and put a silly 9500gt in there :erm:

or would they be that daft?

yeah...probably IS a skulltrail :D
