Just to put that into perspective. Telkom's adsl2 Dslams are capable of offering 24000kbps. They only offer 4000kbps as the highest product speed, and will only guarantee you 640kbps of that.

Obviously ignoring the rest of the network, they can do 24000kbps but only guarantee 640kbps. The moral of the story is, even for the company who owns the whole network, and have the lowest costs and the highest profit margins, they only guarantee a speed 37 times less than what the dslam can do.

Openweb is not stating a guaranteed speed, but rather an expected speed. Those are very different things. In practice Digichilli is doing exactly the same thing with their "up to 256kbps" line.

According to www.hellkom.co.za the cheapest price per GB at the moment is R29 (I recall someone saying R16, but this is what I could find on helkom).

It means that for R300 you will get 10.344GB. The minimum speed at which you will take a month (I used 30 days as the standard) is 33.4kbps or 4.2kB/s.

In order for DC to remain a viable option that is the speed they need the exceed.

R20/GB=48.5kbps
R10/GB=97.0kbps

I just went purely on a user who would use his link 100% of the time for things like torrents, downloads, etc. I agree that Skype at 4.2 would be an exercise in futility and it would be for most other internet enabled applications.

It would be nice if someone from DC could explain the change from "at least 256kbps" to "up to 256kbps".

It would also be pretty cool for an official "We're rejigging the shaper majiggy" message ...

When i spoke to one of the ladys in the call centre she said they are doing Maintenace on something or other, she could not tell me what, ok fine no problem, but now i get an email from them saying
