Im actually gonna buy me a 30gb Afrihost account now for R435.00, that will atleast allow me to download 30 gigs in a month using my 4mb line!

I reckon they'll make it till the middle of this year, July the latest, end of April the soonest...I wonder how many more months DC is going to survive? anyone wanna offer some predictions as to when DC will shutdwon? I reckon within 2 months they are history
Just remember from next month the price will return to R870.

Hopefully by next month another ISP will launch a proper uncapped product
Even at +-32KB/s , that brings you out to around 83GB in a month and that does not take into account bursting which you practically always receive for 4MB Users, so at around 60KB/s , that is 156GB/month which brings you out to about R1,92 / GB , which is 15 times cheaper than Afrihost!

Natedogg, they cannot even guarantee a 256kbs connection anymore, its anything from 0.01 up to 32kbs. So I can be sitting with a 5kbs connection, bursting to 10kbs on a 4mb line. Go and calculate how many gigs i'll be able to do, then come back and tell me wats more worth it.
Unless they can eventually match the service levels of the upcoming providers they will probably battle, unless of course all the other providers end up charging alot more, which is a distinct possibility.
The other piece of the puzzle i'm interested in will be webafrica's plans regarding local bandwidth.
On that subject, i still think DC should try get a lot of its users gigs going through their upcoming NS. The main cost will then only be telkom ipc. It's cheaper to not have to match you ipc size with international capacity.

For the last few weeks ive been getting a pretty constant 20-30K from astraweb.
Browsing is quite good aswell. I do 98% of my browsing with digichilli now, which is interesting because i have an afrihost account and it dials in less than 2 seconds if i need it. I just wish youtube would stream a lot better.
I's hardly doom and gloom.

Guys, setting up a news server and maintaining it is no joke...ask SAIX, the one they have now is infact a mirror of Giga. They might be planning it, but we are not going to see it any time soon.

Its been about 2 weeks I think? or since they cancelled their trial account users. jak3, U may be getting those speeds, but the majority of the users are getting well below that, its sort of like 500 users, and only 10 of them getting decent speeds, the rest of the 490 users are getting from 1 up to 10kbs.

You don't mirror the whole international NS, you just cache content as it moves through. It not that hard to setup. They just pay the international NS for access to their content.
It's just a glorified cache server.

Nah, I dont have an account with them anymore. I wouldnt pay for it even if money grew on trees!
Thats where you are wrong, most people are getting decent speeds. It's only those who have problems that mention it - when it runs fine people say nothing.
