Digital TV never promised

Nope, got a 72cm tube tv and regualr mnet decoder.

The DSTV I've watched on High def tv's isn't that brilliant to me.

Got a 24" iMac that I watch movies on and seems ok enough for me.

Agreed, DTSV doesn't look too great, although with the right viewing distance it closely resembles a normal CRT, just bigger (and better then :D) I for one have been loving my 42inch plasma, don't know how I watched TV before that ...

Off course when HD eventually becomes mainstream it will cause a marked difference in viewing quality. I'm not ready to splash out though, too little content atm with one HD channel.

Dear rpm,

Please do an article explaining the ****ing difference between HD and DIGITAL. Make it bright yellow with huge red lettering and make it compulsory for every forumite to read at least once before accessing these articles again.

+1 And send it to every journalist as well.

.

The only use for those high definition tv's is gaming as far as I can tell, otherwise a regular flat screen crt is fine.
You're kidding right?

DSTV now has an HD channel. BluRay (and the now redundant HD-DVD) simply looks awesome on an HD TV.

Don't go spending huge amounts on decoders that can only do HD using MPEG2-TS format. Once they switch over to DVB-S2 and using H.264/MPEG4-10 to encode HD video and perhaps SD, then you all are screwed again. Not even to mention when the switch on HDCP and they require hypothetical version 1.4f and your 1080p Full HD device only supports 1.3c

Buy something cheap, because the "technology" will not last.

That's cause the HD that monochoice uses on Dstv is a 25% improvement over the current standard definition we have (720 lines vs 576 lines).

Your 24" display (despite being from a fruit company) is probably Full HD - showing 1080 lines which is a 87.5% improvement over the current standard definition TV.

The one is a carrier transport method and the other is a classification of the quality of a picture. They are independant of each other.

There was this weird monochrome HD standard that the French had until 1986. It had something like 864 lines - bizarre and very French...
