DirectX 10

I'd like to know too...

The problem with these new DX (any version) cards is that they CAN run the game in DX10 (for example) mode and that means they are running a comparatively more intensive game that a DX9 card..

So with the 8600GT would it out perform some of its 7 series rivals in a DX10 title even though they run the game in DX9 mode?

hmm so anyway, hoping that DX10 cards will run even faster (comparatively) in DX10 titles, and seeing how nice those titles looks.. im starting to think about that 8600GT again.

The XFX XXX edition for only R1600 seems good, and its a great factory overclock. But I'll wait to see ATI's price on the HD 2600. The specs look better than the 86xx series, so it just depends on the price.

Hmm too bad though: http://www.fudzilla.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=698&Itemid=1

DirectX 10 looks a lot better than DirectX 9! I really hope I win the lottery soon so I can buy new parts :D

Yeh that's what I'd like to know as well. The 8500 and the 8600 seems to pretty poor in Directx9 games at least compared to the upper ranks of the previous cards. Will they suddenly perform better in DirectX10 or just worse and look a little prettier. Which you'll probably lose because you'll have to turn the settings down.

Seems a bit like Nvidia, is just trying to get the cheaper cards out there, even though they might not be as good. Of course I suppose we won't know until we get some DirectX10 games.

Hold on, weren't those first two pictures discredited in another thread?

hmmm... i've read that they got the clock speed of the 8600gts to 1000mhz! and thats with a bios and voltage mod, but still thats one monster clock

It is. For the same game 8600GT is faster in DX10 mode (if the game has it) than in DX9 "mode". That is under XP the game will be slower than in Vista. For instance Call Of Juarez will be much faster in Vista and look better than in XP.

So... I'm in the progress of upgrading. And been trying to decide what card to get. The ones I like at the moment are a Radeon X1950XT or a two 8500GT's and SLI them. Works out cheaper then anything else I've found. What would be the best option. The X1950XT seems amazing and beats the 8500 hands down. Would it be worth "investing" (as much as you can with PC)'s in those rather for the Direct10 Support. I tend to upgrade about once every 3 years or so, that's more or less my dilemma.

In that case, please do not buy either one. Three years is a long time, so rather then 8800GTS or Radeon HD 2900XT depending on the price when it comes.
(I'd lean towards the 320MB GTS for now seeing as it's about R3K)
Anything else will be killing your investment before you even make it

Great :D

So say one of the games that the 8600GT is currently tested in had a DX10 mode, then if that was enabled would the 8600GT do better in the same benchmark with other cards still running the DX 9 version?

Just making very sure, but since I have Vista this sounds good. A 8600GT it might be then...

Please note that the 8600GT's have been found to perform disappointingly for their price-class. They're meant to replace the 7600GT cards, but with existing games there've been cases where even the older 7600GT's performed better than the DX10-supporting 8600GT's.

The 8600GTS is pricier and performs more decently, but this costs R500 less than the venerable 320Mb 8800GTS cards, which are a good option for people able to spend R3,000 for a graphics card.

I believe that it's still a bit early to be buying DX10 cards, having a very small range of titles available to properly benchmark the hardware with.

If you buy 2 8500GTs they will cost more than 1 8600GT and not even performs as well, its not logical to do that...

I have looked at every review and seen a lot of opinions on this. For their price range I think they aren't bad value at all.

In some new games with certain "next gen" features enabled they outperform a lot of cards, and by far the 7600GT.

There are no retail titles to properly benchmark the cards with, if DX10 is what you mean. But if they will perform better under DX 10 and Vista (which makes sense, pretty sure of that) than they currently do in the reviews, then I am happy to spend R1600 on the XFX XXX edition.

I'm still going to wait for the ATI mid range cards (too bad about their 128 bit bus :() but I don't upgrade very often at all, so I'd at least rather have DX10 now.
