When I downloaded I lost no connection.
Downloaded 64MB and 36MB file never got disconnected.
What do I have to look for.
I use Nokia N70 phone as modem.
Also use nokia PC-Suite to connect.(Latest PC_suite)
Using WinXp64.

No warning from operating system.

In Nokia PC Suite, look for a setting with an option-value like "[searchforum]3GOnly[/searchforum]" or "UMTS Only" or "WCDMA Only", if there is such a thing, select it.

There isnt, AFAIK. He will have to set it on the phone itself under Network Settings.

Hi all,

I played around with the phone settings.
If I select GSM network , I can only connect with GPRS.
If I select Auto then it can switch between 3G and GPRS.
At present I see 3G sign on my phone that lets me know that I'm connected 3G UMTS network. Not familiar UMTS.
I cant force it to use 3G only.

I still dont know why I lose my connection.

Hi IC,

I'm Pre-Paid, I still have 78MB left on my account.

I also use the 3G connection test, I get from 318Kbits + for downloads.
For uploads it is normal modem connection rate 54Kbits +.

I dont know what my signal strength is for 3G.

Last night I still lost my connection, but stayed on for longer.

Isnt there a specific firmware that includes the 3G Only setting on the phone?

[*EDIT*]: AFAIK, the N70 drivers should be included in the Vodafone Mobile Connect installation. Why not download and install Vodafone Mobile Connect, and create a 3G Only profile using that?

Hi Im3G,

The only setting their is GMS or Auto.

If I select Auto I get the 3G icon on my Nokia N70 phone.

Their is no other selection I can make.

I might purchase a Ovation MC950D USB mobile Data Modem.
Cost R679.00, dont know how good this data modem is.
I know it has WinXP64 support which the others don't have.
What if you purchase the unit and it does not work.

Last question do you have to get another simcard for this.
Could you use your own mobile phone simcard.

Hi All,

Looking at the 3G map from Vodacom, I have 3G all around me.

My street is not covered in red. 3G runs on the boundaries of our suburb.
I'm 300 meters away where 3G is available on our boundaries.

Could this be the problem I'm having getting cut of when browsing.
Downloads so far have been ok.

Data card my be an option, but if it does not work. You are stuck with the monthly subscription.

Another question, the profiles you request. Which one to use?.
I have Virgin Mobile, Vodacom and Vlive.

Do I have to get rid of some.

@HowTo, get hold of the latest version of VMC as suggested by Iam3G.

Hi Ic,

Ok I deleted all profiles from Vodacom.
I then installed only the ones from Vodacom, SMS which I received.
Selected the GPRS from Vodacom, now I dont get logged of frequently.
So far it seems to be ok.
Touch wood.

Using VMC, you shouldn't need to delete or edit any connection settings profiles on your phone.

I doubt he even downloaded VMC.

@HowTo, go to www.vodacom.co.za. under Services ->> Mobile Data, and look for VMC9.3. Download it, install it, use VMC to detect your phone as a modem, and then set it to use 3G Only.

Hi ic and Im3G,

I have not downloaded VMC.
Yes I sorted out the disconnect problem.
I deleted all none relevant profiles, and slecte the one which i got via sms.
I'm using the default internet profile they have sent me.
So far it looks ok,touch wood no disconnects so far.
Last night testing the connection speed I only managed "edge speed".
But it is ok now, my area is not completly covered in 3G.
The suburb outskirts receive 3G signal, about couple of houses away from me.
I installed one of the Huw.... 220 modem for our next door neighbour, she also does not receive full strengh signal all the times.
She said Vodacom is working at it.
My download speed is between 381-411kbps and upload speed 53-55kbps.
Better than edge.

Tnx for all your replies.

Hi ic and Im3G,

Who could tell me when Vodacom will sort out the signal strength in our area.
Half of Dersley Park has strong 3G signal while the other half has a bit.
Vodacom is holding a carrot and shown what 3G looks and feel.

Who could comment on this.
As I explained in previous post about my neighbour she bought a Laptop on contract wit data card.

Get a decent data card... I've never seen a phone with equal data capabilities as these VodaFone data devices.

Sometimes (always?) it is not worth to 'sukkel', just get the right equipment, go VodaCom and stop spending time on issues.

I agree, if you're picking up slight 3G on your phone, then with a datacard you should pick up 3G no problem. The antenna in a 3G card is a lot stronger than the antenna in a cellphone.

Well from what I've seen. Sometimes I can't pick up any 3G on my cellphone, but I pop in my datacard, and wham...I have 3G, no problem.

I am in Dersley as well.
I am in a coverage area + 4 houses past me, according to the map.
See 2 bars most of the time on E220
The Doctor's rooms down the road is not on the map, but they see 4 bars most of the time.
The map is a best effort projection though.
If I go to the other side of the house - same as the tower - I get 4 bars, when I have checked though.
Brick house, tile roof (no metal).

Have just dropped customer care a mail re latency, connect problems and disconnects. A real pain when you use it to earn a living:mad:
