Discovery Vitality [2018]

Back in the day it used to be much more delayed in terms of increasing the weekly goal. It would sometimes take weeks to increase by 50 points! I'm just commenting on their newfound efficiency :p

Yeah, it does seem a bit over keen :)

I guess I'm quite fortunate because I work in construction management, so it's quite easy to me to get up from my desk and go for a brisk walk or climb a few ladders. In fact, just general day to day running around I always get 50 points for 5000 steps and often 10000 steps without trying. Sometimes I'll look at my watch at 4 o'clock and if I'm on 8000 steps I'll get up and go for a stroll around site. But yeah, I also have a bit of a dilemma of doing too much in case it rises too fast :p

When I started on the Active Rewards about 2 years ago my initial goal was 600, 700 the following week, 800 the week after that and 900 the next week. Been there ever since even with me taking 2 months off over November and December due to me attempting to use my face to break my fall during a mountain bike race (broken wrist and cheekbone plus some surgery to fix me up).

What's the lowest one's goal can go to if you continuously don't make goal? Mine seems to be stuck on 350, with this last drop being about 4 weeks ago. I've (purposefully) not made goal since November 2017.
I don't think they ever drop the points, I haven't made my goal for over 2 months, (haven't been able to do Parkruns) and my goal has stayed on 900.

I missed my goal for around 4 months before it dropped for 900 to 800.

Between November last year (when I last made target) to April this year, my weekly goal dropped from 700 down to 350 as I didn't bother to make my target anymore. If you guys are finding your goals are not dropping even though you aren't making goal, it's possible that they made things a bit tougher this year by tweaking their 'algorithm'...

Hi guys

For the life of me i cant find an email address to send a mail to vitality support , my points are not reflecting. Is my only option to call?

Super noob question:

I currently pay R400 pm for gym (Not one of the big gym chains, and they only one branch).

I'm trying to figure out if its financially viable to take out a policy with Discovery, add on Vitality and make use of the gym discount for Virgin Active.

Can anyone give me a ballpark figure for how much this would be?

EDIT: Reason I'm thinking about this is so that the monthly premium would go to some kind of policy and then you get "free gym" rather than the entire premium going to gym with no other benefit. Also to make use of the Virgin active near to the office.

You pay R1700 just to join then you need to make weekly targets to get it free otherwise you pay a fee pro rata. Not at gym but use Vitality for running getting my Apple watch and shoes funded. Vitality is R240 pm and there are always “activation” fees but if you make targets it is worth it and provides motivation I guess.

The R1700 is the joining fee for Virgin Active, correct? What about the Discovery fees?

I think weekly targets may be a good thing for me.

Jip you pay it at the gym. Yeah I need to get 900 points a week so that is three runs for an hour.

Do you have another discovery product - life or medical aid? If not, you'd have to get one or the other to be able to get Vitality. Cheapest way is to have a life policy for at least R350, plus the R240 for Vitality.

Then you'd pay the R1700 gym activation fee, as well as go to the gym 36 times in a rolling 12 month period, and achieve your active rewards goals to get your gym booster. Gym booster is explained on the website

Hi,

You are correct, that seems to be the way to go about it. I don't have any Discovery products, and so I need to sign up for the life cover if I want to go the Vitality route.

I did some checking. Virgin Active has a special offer for May where the +-R2000 activation fee is waived.

If you under 30 you can get the smart life plan which allows 100% payback on your premium.
