Discovery Vitality 2021

My wife and I have signed up to Vitality Active rewards this morning. Waiting for it to be activated now. How does the app track workouts through your Apple Watch? I assume it gets access to the Fitness App to get information from there?
it pulls it from the Health app. in the Discovery app, you will need to link the Health app and then manually sync it

if you make use of the apple watch, the watch will sync with the Fitness app which will automatically send the data to the Health app. then you'll have to manually sync the Discovery app.

But that is how fitness works. You reach a stage of diminishing returns which means you have to work harder. Either more distance or more speed...

Take me for example. At first an hour run at about 6:15 mins/km would burn 600/625 calories, now it's only 400/420 calories.

Yup I was on their endurance option, as I tended to do longer distances and lower average heart rates. Had to chase 1200 points per week. Even averaging a heart rate 140 was tough. My resting HR is less than 50(even unfit like now), and in cycling bunch rides my HR would easily into double digits during a 90km ride in the Cradle if I hid in the bunch too much

I gave up on the whole Vitality racket as the “you have to” thing took all the fun out of running and cycling in the end, although I got a gen 0 apple watch out of them (mostly free).

The gist of it all is that their cookie cutter approach to people and fitness is just that... cookie cutter

Note: 220 - age for age based max is just part of the equation. The rest of the formula is +/- 15 bpm, which they don’t(didn’t?) cater for

EDIT: I’ll use apple pay, but spending the money on Vitality to buy deeper into the Vitality ecosystem is not prudent in my eyes

My wife received hers as well, will be using it more, and even more when we both have apple watches.

The next question.

Can two people make use of the vitality benefit at the same time? IE me and my wife get apple watches? Thanks vitality mybb community support!
No, only one member every 24 months.

I also have a generally low heart rate and like you I'm not too interested in the 220 less your age palaver. It's rather rudimentary. It's way better to max out your heart and record the reading.

In any event, I've always found that I work out better when working in pace zones and time in said zones rather than heart rate zones. My heart rate is influenced by too many factors like temperature (in winter my resting heart rate is below 50 and in summer it's slightly above 50) and hydration levels. In winter my average heart rate over a run is also some 10/15 bpm lower than in summer.

That said, I do get why they have taken their approach. It's the going rate for your average human being.

Thanks, that worked. This afternoons walk is now logged in the app. How long does it take to reflect on the app to give me points etc for the workout?

it normally takes about 15 minutes to an hour. but things may have changed since i stopped using the watch.

Steps stopped counting as of 2021.

Each year they just change the rules.
Uhm... no ?!? The rules this year for exercise are exactly the same.

Can you use an Apple Watch without an iPhone? I meet my exercise goals every week anyway, so is it worthwhile getting the watch?

What do all the various Vitality statuses mean? What's the difference between Blue and Gold, for example? Can't seem to find it on their site.

I’m in this vitality thing now too. The last few posts also convinced me to get the Apple Watch, thanks!

You need an IPhone to activate the benefit, but after that you just need to make your goals (using any fitness tracker).

I got the IPhone and Watch 20 months ago, used the IPhone to active the Apple watch benefit and then sold both the Iphone and Apple watch. Have used my Galaxy watch and Samsung phone to make the goals.

You can buy one Apple Watch per Vitality Health policy in a 24-month period. You also need a Discovery Bank credit card.
So if you each have separate Health policies (medical or life insuance) and separate bank accounts then you can get two a Apple Watches.

So the new Active Gear benefit launched this morning. I hate that they're forcing us to buy Nike to get the full discount though.

We have separate bank accounts, we are on the same medical aid and vitality, but we each have our own life insurance with discovery.

Has anyone does a virtual health check? How does.one give a nurse all.your measurements virtually to get the full points?

Yes, you only get 2500 points for this though. I did not give any measurements though, I think that is for the full in person check.

Was literally going this weekend to buy new running shoes as they got stock on the Nikes I like that cost around R2000. Looks like I'll only end up paying R700.

Phoned Sportsmans and they said yes, the discount is upfront and I will only be charged R700 on those pair of shoes if I present the QR code.

Almost sounds too good to be true...
