Do I have VDSL or ADSL2+

So we ordered a 40Mbps VDSL from Telkom, who confirmed our exchange supports it

They came back and said, we can only get 20Mbps VDSL, which we accepted.

Got the modem, a PACE 921VNX (VDSL2 support and backwards compatible with ADSL & ADSL2+)

We get 16.8 DOWN and 0.8 UP

The down is ok, but we expected much more from the upload.

My question, are we even on VDSL because from what I've read in another thread here, if you have 20Mbps, you are actually on ADSL2+, and if I switch my router from ADSL/VDSL to ADSL2+ (G992.5) we get exactly the same speed.

In your opinion, are we on ADSL2+? Any chance we can get better upload than 0.8Mbps?

In yout router it should say what you are connected to,

ADSL2+ is G.992.5
VDSL is G.993.1

It says G.992.5, is there such a thing as 20Mbps VDSL? (Because that's what Telkom said we have)

Aside from the upload speed which should be higher - what are the other benefits of Vdsl?

20Mbps VDSL will be faster than 20Mbps ADSL due to the reduced amount of overhead, where a 20Mbps ADSL line maxes out around 17Mbps, a 20Mbps VDSL line maxes out around 19Mbps

Mmmm, I heard people say that, but there was a thread sometime saying that is not the case.

Thats what I noticed on my line when it was on ADSL 2+ vs VDSL - my VDSL router got hit by lightning so I had to ask Telkom to bump me onto 20Mbit ADSL 2+ for a week or so while it was being replaced and my speedtests were slower and downloads too.
My internet just didn't quite feel the same, although could have been placebo.

Drop TelkomZA a PM and see whether your area is VDSL capable, if so get them to move you over to VDSL.

I'm currently on 20Mbps ADSL2+ and my max down on speedtest so far is 17.3, I've personally used a 40Mbps VDSL line and got 38.5Mbps down. Just waiting for the TP-Link W9980 to come into the country before I switch to 20Mbps VDSL

I see I see, I just didn't think it would make such a difference. As my 20Mbps ADSL2+ performed the same as my VDSL and then they finally changed it to 40Mbps VDSL which performs nicely :).

On Speedtest my ADSL2+ maxed out at 16Mbps DL, while the VDSL maxed out at 19Mbps DL. This on 20Mbps setting.

I haven't bothered to go to 40Mbps VDSL as my internet is fast enough, I don't need anything better at the moment.
