Uber algorhythmically sets prices based on usage and propensity to buy a ride. So if they see a pattern in your usage it is likely that they will drive up the price as long as you keep buying the rides.

I've noticed my usual rides are creeping up in price... I'm going to stop setting the destination to avoid the upfront pricing creep.

Over period of 2 months everyday to work and back.

Very interesting... I'd love to know what distinguishes your profile from mine.

Please update with your findings in this thread, the model that they use will most likely change before there is much utility in knowing it but the knowledge itself is interesting.

So here is an interesting finding.

I checked how much an Uber would cost to take me home, and the price was R177. I was like, nah, too much, so I called a taxify. Two minutes later, while I was waiting for the taxify to arrive, I decided to check Uber again. The price was now R150.

A R27 drop in the space of a few minutes. I wonder if they start high and then go lower if they think you will use alternative transport?

I have noticed this too it's odd and can't fathom why.

Today the Uber set fare was R27. I switched over to Taxify and it cost me R20. For the trip home Uber was back to R22

Not sure if it has been mentioned here yet but I also read that they'll give you surge pricing if your battery is in the red. It wouldn't surprise me if Uber is able to infer from activity/state of your phone that you may have checked a competitor quick.

I haven't personally experienced this though.

Going to give Taxify a crack tomorrow evening after our work function.

Would expect this from Uber

I've been using both Uber and Taxify quite a bit for a while.

These days however I find myself using Taxify more than Uber. Uber is just too expensive. Uber often comes in with an estimate above R180. Sometimes up to R250. The busier traffic is, generally the higher Uber charges. Although, it is important to note that Uber doesn't display anything about surge pricing at those times, it just jacks the price. I do remember one day Uber wanted R250 for a trip that usually costs R180. And traffic wasn't even bad.

So I use Taxify quite a lot. Taxify generally ends up costing about R130 to R150. I do still use Uber, because when the price goes low enough, it is worth it when you consider the eBucks rebate. But honestly, everyone should have both apps on their phones. The quality of cars and drivers is about the same and Taxify is cheaper. It is only sometimes that Uber will win because of eBucks.

I used uber for the first time last week. Was very easy and I will definitely use it again. Haven't heard about taxify before this thread, just downloaded the app now. I see they don't give you the full cost of the trip in advance. Unless I'm missing something. I can only enter the pick up point and not the destination.

Yes that is true. You only know how much the trip will cost after you take it. Generally Taxify is cheaper for the same trip.

The only caveat is that sometimes the Taxify navigation software will take you on a route that is faster in time but longer in distance, and this can end up being quite a bit more expensive. So, you need to know the most direct route and instruct the driver to take it.

Then I doubt if I will use that, I would rather pay a little more and know exactly how much I'll be paying, then get a potential surprise.

Does Taxify not have a quote feature?

I loaded the Taxify app last week. When I tap on it, the screen turns white but no other info or guide what to do. Iphone SE

when you do set your pick up location, you can select price estimate and input the destination

If anyone would like to use my referral code, you will get R150 off your first ride. Just enter YHK9W under promotions

That app is broken. It now says I'm in vosburg. Don't even know where that is.
