As the tittle suggest is software assurance from MS really worth it?

We need to buy server licencing next year and we are buying Server 2008 and then just downgrading to Server 2003.

Now if we take software assurance it cost nearly R2000 more per server and only lasts until 2011.

Difficult question to answer, it depends on the type of OVL that you are on. I have customers who only buy software assurance, while others don't.

If your company is heavily reliant on new technology, and upgrade frequently, then it is a good buy.

You are going to downgrade, so I assume that Windows 2003 does everything that you require, and may not even go to 2008. Problem is that you will have to move away from 2003 one day, and when you do, what will you move to? In two years time it will not make sense to move to 2008, but rather to move to 2010 (or whatever it is); and then you need another license. I would recommend that you buy it with SA....

Also, how many other servers do you have, and do they have SA???

Well the way it see it the quote we received the SA only lasts till 2011. So if we buy it now the chance that we will upgrade is very slim as I don't see the point of upgrading to Server 2008.

The only questions is will there be a new server released by 2011?

We had a Enterprise agreement that expired so we need to true up by next year april.
