Does it scratch?

I don't like the bulk a case adds to a phone. Is it safe to use an iPhone 4 (or 4S) without protection?

What is your experience?

Try not to drop it too many times on tarmac :D

I'd say go with whatever you're more comfortable with, but with less protection, it will definitely scuff, get damaged and the risk of breaking is considerably higher regardless of the phone.

Common sense, really :o

It won't scratch, unless you deliberately attack it with sharp objects or share its pocket with keys, change and other metal objects but that isn't the real problem. Without protection you'll notice the phone becomes quite slippery when placed on just about anything hard and slips out of pockets easily which leads to a crack.

Never used my iPhone 4 in a pouch and besides for the massive crack you won't find a single scratch. Find yourself a nice cover to protect from drops, Ozaki has some sexy covers.

Scratches pretty easily actually. Don't let those YouTube videos tell you otherwise. Get protection back and front. Sides also take a beating but can be buffed back into near perfect condition with those woman's.......or men's if that's how you roll, spongy nail files.

Without a case the risk of "drop and crack" is much higher.

Musica sell a film cover that sticks onto the front and back of the phone that does wonders for preventing scratches. It's only R129 and adds no bulk to the phone. Of course that doesn't protect it from getting dropped, but if you're careful with it that shouldn't be a problem.

Yes and no.
I have been using my iPhone 4 without a screen protector or a case for quite a few months and it only has one scratch from dropping it while running across the road. It's a little scratch about 3mm long.
I prefer not using the screen protector because I like how responsive the touch interface is without it.
During everyday use my phone goes into my pocket with my keys, some small change and my lighter. Even though they fight in my pocket the iPhone still has no scratches on the screen.

It wont be scratched easily. There is no fine line. I've been using my iPhone 4S for two months, no scratches yet.

By the way this is 2012, who still drops phones? I haven't done since I was a teenager.

I take it you haven't had a drunken night out since you were a teenager either? :D

There are some very slim cases out there, mine adds about 1.5mm to the thickness and about 1mm to either side. Trust me an iPhone needs a case, it's slippery and shatters when dropped.
