Do you use WhatsApp voice instead of regular voice calling, and how does it work for you?

Are there certain contacts you can't have a decent call with - example, friends on Cell C, MTN, etc - or are there certain times of day it does not work well?
 
Not as well as Facetime, but yeah, it works well.
 
Works great, have family in Zim and use it all the time to talk to them. There are some weird noises, echoes and lag from time to time though but it's basically free and usually works better than a normal call.
 
Inconsistent, sometimes works well, other times we have to switch to Skype because the lag on whatsapp is too long, makes conversations impossible
 
Fundamental issue I have with it is that it uses the person your are callings data. Seems rude to call someone else and expect them to pay for it, especially in a country where mobile data is not cheap. If you are both on wifi and confirm that before hand maybe but generally I find it too much of a fuss.
 
It is almost always laggy. Plus you are hoping the other guy has enough data and switched it on.
 
It was super helpful for me just recently. When I traveled to the US recently I couldn't find any prepaid sim cards for sale in the airport, but because the airport had free WiFi I could just jump onto that network and use whatsapp to voice call my wife at home (she was on our home WiFi) and let her know I hadn't died. Score one for technology: free AND it was actually the only thing working. No problems with call quality, it was nice and clear.
 
Don't use it in place of normal mobile calls yet. I only use it when on wifi and I know the other person is also on wifi. It's much better these days than in the beginning, but there are still the odd time here and there when it's weird and laggy.
Oh yes and agree that Facetime is consistently much better.
 
I couldn't answer the poll. To say 'yes' would be dishonest, to say 'no' would also be dishonest.
 
Works well for me!!

Often find the call quality to be superior to regular calls.

Agree though with others in terms of occasional lag and cost implications for some on OOB rates.
 
I don't really find it any less reliable than a conventional call. In fact, probably more stable.
 
I use both WhatsApp and Viber for voice calls. I was already using Viber before WhatsApp had voice calling, and was very happy with it... but since some of my contacts are now on WhatsApp only, I use both.

In my experience, Viber has (on average) better call quality. The main complaint I have with WhatsApp is that there is sometimes a considerable lag.

Viber also has a feature which I like:
You can make audio and video calls from the desktop, and you can SEAMLESSLY transfer calls to/from mobile. I use this feature quite often.
