Don't upgrade your cellphone now

Mobile operators aren’t going to like this.

If you’re addicted to the two-year upgrade cycle that contracts afford you, and you’re due a new handset now (or soon)… wait.

Mobile operators love this. The longer you stay on your overextended contract without upgrading the less they have to subsidise your sparkly handset.

^unless it causes people to cancel their contracts with the plan of entering new contracts with whichever operator offers them the best deal

If I was due an upgrade right now, I would just get the Samsung Galaxy S3... the best phone has already been released.

Yea there are already some very strong phones on the market and samsung's release of the next galaxy won't be for a while.

I agree ,,bought one on Friday afternoon R5000.
I have the s2 now the s3 also, the s3 is not such a major upgrade from the s2.
The s3 is better for sure but no that much .
The s2 is still an awesome phone.
BTW my s3 is not branded and the s2 is vodacom branded .

So CHEAP :), is this offer still available?

I am due for an upgrade (long overdue) on my CellC contract and want the S3 as i am currently using an 8520 since 3 years ago. I am salivating for some touch screen goodness of my own.

The quoted deal in the article from MTN seems good but how would i be able to take it if using an existing CellC contract? Where will number portability play a role here? I have an idea how but i rather hear from the experts :). Basically i want to keep my existing 084 number and free minutes not a deal breaker unless anytime minutes for emergencies.

+1 thanks Hilton

Bought it privately from a guy that upgraded and needed the money ,box was still sealed.
It is a really great phone ,still getting used to it.
BTW it uses a micro sim.

My VC contract ends next month, set them to change me to PAYG. Then simswap to Cell C and convert to the 99c month-to-month contracts. Will bolt on a phone etc once all the new ones come out. Simplest way forward with all the new phones about to come to SA in the next few months.

I just wish I could get a 3.5" or not more than 4" waterproof/resistant smartphone that was also toughened up. Sony Ericsson have a really nice idea with their active, but it is a bit small and running an outdated Android version. Motorola Razr all look great, but are massive - so screen damage is an issue.

Seriously am I the only one who has an issue damaging phones out and about? hiking/beaches/rivers/outdoors/table edges/rain are all a massive problem for all these new smartphones.

Oh and could someone also please get them to put bigger batteries on the list?

Right now, it looks like a Lumia 920 for me - the Samsung ATIV is basically a Win8 version of the GS3 which looks great, but isn't anything special - the 920 with that optically stabilized camera at least pushes into new territory, not a little spec bump from last year's tech, which is all that Android phones seem to be nowdays.

The cherry on the top is the Nokia WP8 exclusive software, which unlike the crapware that Android makers put on their phones, is really amazing stuff - totally offline free global navigation, a great free music solution, and their new camera apps with the time-shifting masking is next-gen stuff nobody is even close to having. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flNomXIIWr4

Contract due for upgrade in December which fits very nicely with the next iPhone release.Lets hope there will be stock because I remember trying to get the 4s for my wife last December and that was a mission of note!

Waiting for Galaxy Note 2, if it's too pricey by the time I get my phone (December/January) will then go for the One X.

Can upgrade already but nothing available at present beats the Note I already own. Note 2 specs disappointing. Wish HTC could come up with a Note-like device for a change. Maybe jump into Windows 8 just for the hell of it ... new gadgets must be explored.

Not really.

You can change to a cheaper contract without a handset. The law allows you to upgrade that contract as soon as you want to.

i got onto cellc in september last year and grabbed the sgs2. and i still love it. my upgrade time will be around july i'm guessing.

i wonder if i'll be able to hold out for the sgs5. i'm assuming the sgs4 comes out next year and then the 5 in q1 or q2 2014... but if i can wait for the s5, then the s6 won't be that far away. and what about the s7? or the s8 or s9?

i have a patience problem. i could have waited a month or two to get the galaxy note. i liked being one-up on my co-workers(wasn't hard i must admit, they all had dingleberries). i can't always beat people at sports or brain thinking, so i go for technological advantage.

Me thinking the same thing.
Gonna grab a Win8 phone just because :D

Bullc%$p. BB, iPhone, Lumnia are all pieces of worthless p00. Just get an Android and stop worrying new and better phones, the old ones still receive updates and keep up with the newest tech.
