What FTTH options are available for the Douglasdale area?

Seems our BC and trustees have without consulting entered into an agreement for 5 years with SADV. SADV claims to be Open Access but all I have seen is a letter of intent from Vodacom.

As far as I know Telkom has put down some fibre in our area and that SADV is waiting on DFA to do the same which could take months to complete.

WEBAfrica claims they can do fibre through Telkom but so far just talk no action..... could it be that SADV blocking them?

It also looks like SADV is extremely pricey

Our complex also has SADV fibre... Some people are using it already I believe.

Few weeks ago they let us know everything is all set up and ready to go.

As for pricing... Yeah it's not the best.

Have they (SADV) got exclusivity at your complex or can you use another fibre option?

Believe it's exclusive.

Not sure how the data works. Surely you could just buy your data elsewhere and switch accounts as with ADSL data? Or not.

CISP should have an MSA in place with SADV in the next week or so.

I looked at the CISP packages with Metrofibre and had another look at their offering which is not too shabby. Wonder how active/serious they are in Douglasdale

Greencom are currently working with Metrofibre Networks in the Douglasdale area. MFN are open access network so you not locked into one ISP.

Where is your complex?
You welcome to email [email protected] she is the FTTH Residential Development Manager at Greencom.

Currently there are 3 large complexes Live and running. An additional 5 are in build. They very serious about getting the Douglasdale area up and running

Thx Greencom. It is one of the Summercon/Landsdowne Developments, "Marrakesh" in Hornbill Street. It seems that our BC with the help of Landsdowne have locked in with SADV:mad: for 5 years

That's sad to hear. Both ourselves and Metrofibre met with them. Plans were done last year already and now with the precinct rolling out Marrakesh would have been high on the list for installation

Greecom - who did your trenching in Douglasdale? The quality of work that was done there has been beyond dismal. My front garden has been utterly destroyed. I have to bring in a company and pay quite a tidy little sum to fix your mess. My grass is completely dead and the sand that was put back is not even level. On top of that, your company did not even bother to notify anyone in the neighbourhood about the work being done.

And the fibre in the ground is not yours, no? It's Metrofibre, correct? I suggest you speak to your MD and team internally and get your **** sorted out. I know of a few companies that outshine your work ten fold. Posting in the Greencom thread because people need to know about your shoddy work.

Hi MaryJane, Greencom are just an ISP on top of Metrofibre's network, your best bet is to reach out to them to try and have your issues resolved. What makes things more tricky is this area is the public space. I would suggest you make contact with them before paying a contractor to fix, as it makes things very complicated at that point.

Yeah - I figured. I am hoping to understand who the trenching contractors are and make sure the company I work for does not use them. Or if they do, make sure that they are removed from the approved list, or put tighter controls in place to ensure that their quality of work is improved.

The owner of the fibre will not pay for the work to my front lawn. I did not take any before pictures. I only have a strip of green grass where they did not dig up. I have accepted that. It's a hard lesson, but hopefully some of you guys can learn from it. If you see people trenching, take a pic with a newspaper of your garden. Then you will be able to argue to have them fix any damage.

Hi Maryjane

is this the current trenching happening in Hornbill?

The ground where they trench is public space. It's not your property, it belongs to the municipality...

You are 100% correct.
The space from a boundary wall to the curb is reserved for all infrastructure, water, telecom, electricity etc

What does that have to do with anything? Pointing out random facts is not going to fix my front garden and is actually making me even more angry.

And no, not in Hornbill. It's trenching that was done a few weeks ago. My grass was dug up completely and left like that for about a week. Hence the grass dying. With the rain and everything else, my front garden looks like a massive mud pit with bits of rock and a few patches of grass.

Don't worry about responding here. You don't seem able to deal with such an issue. I will just ring your CEO directly.

Just like the company doing the trenching can't keep you responsible for making a garden on ground that does not belong to you, you can't hold them responsible for trenching on ground that doesn't belong to you.

Any refurbishments (esp. paving and gardens, and lawns, etc) that the contractors do, is a favor to you. They are by NO MEANS obligated to restore your garden and/or pavement that's on ground that does not belong to you.

Wait until the municipality comes dig up that ground to repair a sewer pipe (which also runs there), and THEN look at how your garden will look.

You're barking up the wrong tree I'm afraid. You're complaining about something which 1) you do not owe, and 2) you have no right to complain over, unfortunately.

MetroFibre is not the municipality. The Municipality has given these companies the right to dig up the land to put the fibre into the ground on the proviso that they restore the damage they do to it's former state. There are a number of companies which do work with all the big players and have done 1000s of kms worth of trenching. Their processes and contractor selection is done to ensure that they don't cause too much damage. This is a private company damaging my front garden for their profit gain. I now have to fork out thousands to re-level my front yard, plant grass and work on it to make sure it grows properly.

The only reason I know it was MetroFibre is because of these forums. They didn't even bother to notify the residents or correctly mark the areas that they working in. I suspect that this is against the requirements set out by the Municipality.
