Durban radio jock gets death threats over Facebook post

Jeff Wicks, News24

Durban - A veteran Durban radio producer has found himself in hot water over an insensitive Facebook post commenting on the death of two city cyclists at the weekend.

Now East Coast Radio jock and Sunday Tribune columnist Kevin Minter-Brown has received veiled threats to his life as a wave of vitriol sweeps social media.

Minter-Brown on Monday posted a comment in jest, suggesting that a running club be started on the N3, after it emerged that cycling on the M4, scene of the weekend tragedy, was in fact illegal.

This after cyclists Richard da Silva and Jarred Dwyer were hit by a car and killed on Sunday morning while on a training ride.

He posted: "I'm thinking of starting a running club… I know there's plenty of other roads, but I think if there is an opportunity to put us directly in harms way, then why not?"

He removed the post shortly afterward and has since proffered an unconditional apology.

Speaking to News24, Minter-Brown said that the backlash had been overwhelming and that social media users were "ruining" his life.

"I am surprised by how far this has gone. Right now, it feels like there is more ill feeling aimed at me than the driver of the car," he said.

"I accept all responsibility for what I wrote and it was done in satire like a lot of my posts. This one was in poor taste and it wasn't directed at anyone in particular," he stressed.

"I had a very bizarre death threat at 4am yesterday when I got a phone call to say that there is ambulance outside waiting for me. I don't know what to make of it and I have received the most vitriolic stuff in my inbox on Facebook.

"I have spent 15 years at ECR doing good work and I hope everyone can see past a silly moment on Facebook," Minter-Brown said.

He declined to comment on what action the radio station had taken against him.

East Coast Radio had not responded to questions at the time of publishing.

Nah, was comparing to the bus lane on the N3 ie: marked but not closed off.

I thought they had just been stupid and used the wrong colour tar there by mistake :p.. considering every tom dick and sally uses it as a normal lane these days.

As much as I disagree with his post and it was in massively bad taste...

All the people that are throwing death threats and shyte his way need to get charged and suffer the consequences of being retarded.

Unfortunately this is the trend in SA in that no one respects or obides by the law anymore. In this case both parties were acting illegally. Had just one party stuck to the law this would not have happened.

I feel sad for both parties in that their mistakes cost more than 3 lives, being the 2 deseased and the driver who's life is ruined.
It obviously spreads to all those arround them.

Everybody should obey and respect the laws and this country would prosper.

They are completely fair, but ill timed and a bit in bad taste given the emotion this topic generates from all sides.

Radio jock fired over cyclist comments

An East Coast radio personality has been fired for comments he made following the death of two cyclists at the weekend.

Kevin Minter-Brown's contract was terminated after the comments he made on his Facebook post about two cyclists struck by a car on the M4 Freeway in Durban North sparked controversy.

Minter-Brown's firing was welcomed by many listeners while others were more sympathetic to his plight.

It would appear that the senior producer deleted his comments and apologised.

"In light of the insensitive and offensive comments made by contractor Kevin Minter-Brown on his personal Facebook page following the tragic deaths of two cyclists on the M4 Ruth First Highway on 7 February 2016, East Coast Radio has taken the decision to terminate Minter-Brown’s contract with immediate effect," said East Coast Radio’s spokesperson, Anisa Ussuph.

Just wow!

Rubbish station anyway

Please bring 702 to Durbs, the only one that has not been neutered yet.

Personally won't be considering a Veedubs anytime soon either.

Ironic position really, considering the pocket rocket involved.

Outrageous.
No better than the inquisition 500 years ago.

Well, I wish I could comment (cant comment on that FB) and tell McCarthy that I will never ever support their group due to this action (of removing the sponsorship) and ECR won't ever play in my car if I am down there.

Ditto.

What McCarthy and ECR are effectively saying is that they endorse the actions of those who defied the law while condemning any person who criticizes their illegality.
