Mom speaks of hurt over DJ’s cycling joke

Durban - The family of one of the cyclists who was killed by an allegedly drunk driver on the M4 highway say they were angry and upset over “hurtful remarks” made by a popular radio DJ about the cycling fraternity.

Kevin Minter-Brown, who was dismissed from East Coast Radio on Wednesday because of his comment, wrote a post on Facebook on Monday, hinting at the illegal nature of the ride on Sunday in which two Kings Park Cycle Club members, Jared Dwyer and Richard da Silva, were killed.

He said he had found that several cyclists had died on that particular stretch of the M4 highway since 2010.

He later said the post – which dealt with starting a running club and running on the N3 – was meant to be humorous.

East Coast Radio general manager Boni Mchunu said on Wednesday: “In light of the insensitive and offensive comments made by contractor Kevin Minter-Brown, East Coast Radio has taken the decision to terminate his contract with immediate effect.

East Coast Radio would like to humbly apologise for his callous remarks.”

Da Silva’s mother, Rosa, told The Mercury through tears that she could not accept “any word” that went against her son.

“You can’t make a hurtful joke about someone dying. We are all just devastated and cannot believe he was taken from us. I would not wish this hurt on any mother.”

Da Silva said her son had always been careful when cycling and questioned why people were blaming cyclists when it was alleged that the driver was drunk and had been speeding.
“He never drove drunk or recklessly. Safety was a priority for him,” she said.“This time, only two people died. Next time, it could be 10 or 15, yet we are still blaming the cyclists.”Meanwhile, members of several cycle clubs and the city attended a meeting held at the Green Hub at Blue Lagoon on Wednesday,

End of the day they have a business to run and a more than anything radio is affected by the likability of the DJ. If people think he is an insensitive **** then they won't tune in.. I don't necessarily agree with it but I can understand their viewpoint.

Safety was clearly not a priority for him if he was illegally on a stretch of road on a pedal cycle.

Sorry mom, but you may not accept "any word" that went against your son, but he was in a place he wasn't supposed to be... Saying this doesn't excuse the drivers actions at all, but if you son had put his safety first and obeyed the law he would not have been in that place.

I don't disagree at all, its a business and its all about the public perception...

BUT there are still labour law aspects that need to be followed, and you can't really fire someone because someone else doesn't like him.

That is pretty much how Gareth Cliff built his show back in his 5FM days, the controversy draws listeners in more than they push away. Something really went pear in the ether in 2016 though, north is south, free speech is hate crimes, wrong is right, right is left.

I reckon Kevin Minter-Brown would still have his job if this was 2015.

Errrr maybe, surely popularity is major factor even in the hiring process? I mean if a DJ is hated by all then they won't get hired? Assume there is a clause in his contract about popularity, only question is whether enough people thought his comment was in bad taste enough to affect their listening behaviour. Will be interesting to see if this goes to labour court..

Probably right, people seem a lot more sensitive to it these days...

Not just him but the Radio station as a whole drove away many many many people. I used to be a hardcore 5FM listener. Then they started to get rid of all the good people of which Gillman was one. Then the whole music changed. I hardly still know of anyone listening to 5FM. I'm actually amazed it's still running.

Maybe the contract does have a clause relating to popularity, but I would assume that they would have to have numbers to back things up if it went to court.

Simply telling the judge/mediator that "We had a few people complain" would not be good enough if you ask me.

I never got Gillman. Back then I was a teen and all he ever did was scream into the mic which was f**king annoying.

Remember Danger Boy? I think it might have been an age thingy. He was BRILLIANT!. IIRC he now has a show on some British radio station in the UK.

Oh, the drunk driver should rot in jail for his life, but that doesn't mean the cyclist are blameless angels.

This is exactly why when ever I go cycling, I try use the pavement as much as possible, although for those with a road bike it's not ideal given they have zero suspension. I just don't trust motorists. Thankfully I'm more on the mountain than on the road.

But anyways more on topic. Maybe the cyclists shouldn't have been there to begin with but it's the same as bikers lane splitting. It shouldn't be done but it is and unfortunately as a person in a vehicle, you need to be the one that's cautious.

I thought Gillman was a total knob, but then came Cliff :D

Preferred Barney Simon's playlist to them all ...

AROUND 1000 cyclists paid tribute to Richard da Silva (46) and Jared Dwyer (36) in a touching memorial ride on the M4 on Sunday morning. The duo*were tragically killed on the M4 a week ago near the Broadway off-ramp. Several cycling clubs, Durban North residents, the mayor of eThekwini, and first lady, Tobeka Madiba Zuma were all in attendance in what was an emotional tribute*to the cyclists.

Yep and you can see the wide concrete path set aside for cyclists and pedestrians to cross the bridge on the left and right.
