As to the legality of cycling on the freeway; to be honest I had never heard of that before this incident. I thought the I only road you couldn't ride on were National roads and I believe most of the cycling community probably thought the same. Its not exactly a well publicised law; they are no signs anywhere on Durban's freeways prohibiting cycling that I have ever seen.

With respect bud, you must be living under a rock then.
RIP and sad unnecessary loss of life, but if you want to take the moral high ground against someone who has broken the law and caused trauma, death or injury, make sure you are also obeying the law at the same time.

The driver is gonna get hammered, but it is exactly this type of attitude you display that makes people wonder if the rules of the road apply to everyone except cyclists.

The driver is gonna get hammered,

The driver should get hammered but, considering the matchless incompetence of SAPS, Forensics, NPA and Court systems where dockets, samples and witnesses go missing, there is a good chance that a half decent lawyer will find enough loopholes to get him off.

By in large, the M4 is the only decent road to use if you need to do any sort of distance training, its long, in most places has a decent emergency lane to utilise, and has varied elevations.

Rubbish, what is wrong with NMR that has a dedicated bicycle lane?

How long is the NMR bicycle lane? What sort of gradients does it have?

After umgeni, there is a dedicated lane, prior to umgeni going into Durban North are some nice steep hills and up and downs. Or just cycle from NMR to promenade and do a loop in that manner. The fact of the matter is that the city HAS actually taken pains to cater for cyclists but they still disregard the law.

In my original comment a gave you a reason why it is not the only used road by cyclists, don't selectively quote me and then make it seem like I'm defending them to the hilt.

It is all irrelevant...

The law is clear, cyclists are prohibited on Freeways. Plain and simple.

Thats fine, they can ignore at their own peril. Just to make a point, when my folks worked in Durban North, I used to cycle home when I felt like it ( Mackeurtan Ave to Botanic Gardens ) and that would be a pretty decent workout so this is not coming from someone who never cycles or hasn't actually cycled that route.

Legal route

- Mackeurtain Ave to Broadway
- Broadway to Hypermarket By the Sea
- From Hypermarket across the bridge by the M4 ( this is the only legal section for cyclists to cross )
- Into Blue lagoon and the either via promenade to Argyle or NMR to Argyle
- Up Argyle to Cowey
and through Cowey into Botanic Gardens.

Without getting involved in what happened this past weekend.

I cycle, mainly off road though but when i do ride on the road the attitude of some of the other cyclists is shocking.

Riding two abreast, not stopping at robots and stop streets. Like i said this has nothing to do with this weekends happenings, take a drive any Saturday or Sunday morning up to Camperdown from Hillcrest and you will see what happens.

Spend a fair amount of time up in Hillcrest, especially around the back end of Giba gorge and see it all the time...

Some groups do everything by the book, but others, well yeah.... the less said about their attitude the better really.

Ot I see a sign on the M12 that its a dedicated bicycle lane from 4-630 mornings and evenings has any one ever seen it being used at that time by cyclists

Not closed off, just like the bus lane, indicated for cyclist use during the time period so a car can be fined.
