Its funny that their increased cost in doing business every year since 2007 is +R30. Seems normal inflation and rand strength has nothing to do with it.

Maybe I should just stop watching sport. If it wasn't for sport, I would not be paying R6708 for TV each year!

This [price increase] is to enable us to continue to provide the same quality of service into the future

Your kidding right! I guess if you call old programs and reruns quality then yes - increase the prices for the same 'quality'

They just want more money, simple as that, the answer is Greed. They can increase the price because there is nothing we can do about it, just like Telkom. The SA consumer simply has no other choices, if you want some entertainment with HDTV and your sports, where are you going to go? If you want ADSL, who do you go to?

This is why competition is important and these companies are too rich and greedy to let anyone else get a piece of the pie, as I always say, "Get rich because the poor don't run *****!"

DSTV is not worth the money.

I for one don't watch sports and everything else is available on the www :)

Thant is quite amazing!
Total increase since 2007 on Premium of R119 (27%), while the Select has gone up with R18 (13%)? AND this does not include the HD PVR 'nominal fee'

I am sure every-time it comes to the increases they sit in the board room and do their projections, how much can we increase the prices and not loose to much subscribers. I am sure it is a finely balanced ritual they perform (Don't increase it to much as it will cost customers, but increase it by as much as possible without to much loss of customers) so we they can maximize their bonuses

And every time they come up with a magical R30.

I read the article for the 'explanation' but am still looking...

If you consider that costs of their hardware have plummetted, and much of the content we get must have come down in price over the years, as well as their increased numbers (requiring no extra broadcasting outlay on their side), they HAVE to be able to contain costs.

I an tell almost for certain that their explicit strategy is to maintain revenue per user (after inflation) at a level or growing path by whatever means necessary, and to 'add value' every year to try to maintain this level. They will only possibly consider lowering top line after-inflation revenue if genuine, serious competition kicks in. That is the way of business.

The day that my kids leave home I'm absolutely cancelling!

They would have a better time convincing us their prices have to go up when the fuel price goes up because they need lots of fuel to deliver the signals to space.

It all comes down to generating more revenue to satisfy the shareholders .... its part of the way things work ... every year we want to make more money instead of less money or the same money ... so its a balance between increasing prices and keeping customers happy enough so that they wont cancel their subscriptions ...

+1

Total BS. It goes up EXACTLY R30 each year (premium). If it was cost of doing business it would not be EXACTLY R30 each and every year.

On the plus side, that R30 is becoming a lower percentage of the total each year.

I think DSTV is counting way too much on their sport channels to retain their clients, at some point even sport becomes unfordable. This must be good news for TopTV though.

I paid up front for the year and this will be the last year. I can buy a lot of new hardware and DVD's, and can even buy a season ticket for Rugby and one for Cricket for that R5000.

Not that I have uncapped ADSL, but uncapped ADSL, seedboxes and torrents mean that you can get the premium stuff off the internet for free so ya, there will come a point where MultiChoice increases will start to work against them
