What she is not saying (because it is nice to make people think DSTV thinks it has competition) is that Top TV isn't aiming for DSTV's subsribers. At least not the subscribers that DSTV really wants, which is the wealthy viewer. TOP TV gets to pick up those who cannot afford DSTV. It is not competition but rather two feeders in the same pond... one is a surface feeder and the other a bottom feeder. Considering them in competition is just silly no matter what who says. Companies in SA are very good at these type of arrangements. I believe government itself actually makes these arrangements for some reason... CUNNING STUNTS that they are! Think of Neotel and Telkom for an example...

Yip, different target markets alltogether.

There is always a choice. I made that choice years ago when I gave up DSTV completely. The problem is that the average South African DSTV viewer is a lazy, spineless coward who couldn't do without DSTV for one month.

But if enough of those lazy spineless cowards got together and all canceled their DSTV in one go... I can guarantee you that DSTV would be hammering at their door one month later with a nice new product, conveniently packaged for their price point! :D

Free market economy puts the power in the hands of the consumers, but our SA consumers are too dumb or lazy to use that power.
Either that, or maybe they secretly love taking it up the chute from companies like DSTV. Bunch of closet homosexuals.

It all comes down to generating more revenue to satisfy the shareholders .... its part of the way things work ... every year we want to make more money instead of less money or the same money ... so its a balance between increasing prices and keeping customers happy enough so that they wont cancel their subscriptions ...

Except that (according to some other posters) MuckyChoice increased their subscriber base by 10s of thousands, so they're already generating a lot more revenue. So this is not so much about "generating more revenue" as it is about "generating excessive profits", simply because they can.

The Premium package pricing is getting out of hand. Add the PVR addition and decoder insurance, and it's a crazy price. If Multichoice wants to incur more costs to make their offering more appealing, they should definitely consider that a huge part of the appeal is pricing. I hope TopTV brings out an offering that will be able to directly compete with the premium package in the next few years - I'll be moving out of principle alone if they do!

Vote with your wallets folks! DSTV is just not worth it.

Yeah, good luck with that! They all come in here and bitch and whine about the increases, and cry if only they would give us the channels we want. But when you actually look them in the eye and ask them if they will be canceling their subscription, they look sheepish and mumble something about sport and the family and then look at the ground and twiddle their thumbs.

Bunch of spineless cowards... I am furiously trying to think of a foolproof way to milk money off them as well... because the one guarantee you have is that this bunch of yellow striped chickens will just hand over their money like Daddy does to his daughter in a mini-skirt on Friday night when she is on her way to the mall with her others slutty friends.

You can, of course, watch about twenty DSTV HD channels for FREE on W7 at 36.0E. Look up by googling 'W7 satellite' and looking at Lyngsat. If you still have a DSTV dish up get it turned to look at W7 and get yourself an MPEG-4 receiver. Most dealers have these.

Stop adding things.
Just reduce the price. Is your loyalty not to existing customers rather than the few you might gain thru added value?

It would be interesting to see the viewer figures for each channel that DSTV has. I cannot believe that some have any viewers. The same goes for the music channels.

It is the same with the people that use ABSA and get ripped off on bank charges, seems people don't care to be raped by Multichoice. I would love to get DSTV, but just too damn expensive.

Sigh . . . but it's true. :o

People will pound their chests in mock outrage, scream boycott, promise solidarity, and then when April comes, pay the bill. Including me. :o

Our pathetic excuse is the kids. Everything we watch is sourced elsewhere but those damn kids channels are hard to duplicate elsewhere.

What are the chances that TopTV would every get the sports right that SS owns right now? DSTV has the numbers, the capital and the means to hold on to the rights - something that TopTV doesn't. With this increase, more money will be in mC's kitty to pay for the rights (remember PSL rights moving to DSTV because they paid R1 billion - something the SABC didn't?).

One should not hold their breath hoping that TopTV will be able to compete for the content (incl. sports) that DSTV is interested in; because of above mentioned resources.

Haha...added 8 channels... he doesn't mention they removed some... downscaled the quality on HD broadcasts, that their HDPVRs are still buggy years on, etc, etc, etc

Extremely good! ... if all the current DSTV subscribers had the balls to cancel their subscription and give TopTV a chance a change to bid for the rights.
The sports channel providers would go where the subscribers are... right now they are all with DSTV cos they are too thick to realise that they are being ripped off.

The solution to this exploitation is to invoke the Egypt clause... we agree that from April the 1st, we'll all cancel our subscriptions until Multichoice reduce their prises...

(typo)

They won't decrease prices until they stop getting new subscribers. If I was running a business and people were willing to pay an exorbitant price for my product, I'd keep increasing the price until my customers started dropping off, adjust down slightly so I am still getting new customers, and smile all the way to the bank. The only thing that would force me to lower prices would be competition... I would be forced to lower prices until consumers of my product would be happy to stay with my product.

DSTV needs real competition, and TopTV is definitely not competition... what I can't fathom is why someone at topTV doesn't just go take a look at the top 15 downloaded series torrents, and get those shows into primetime slots. That, and maybe look at investing in the rights to some sporting events. If Multichoice are posting R2.9billion in profits, there's definitely good business to be had stealing DSTV subscribers. I'd be willing to bet that my view is wholly naive though. There are people way cleverer than me heading up these companies.
