DStv Explora decoder details revealed

Wait, so its an internet connected decoder that doesn't internet?
What's the point?

What a F>k is so secretive about this so called new decoder? It doesn't come with Internet and 1080p HD! Boring!!!! Somebody wake me up with the next iteration:twisted:

If too many people find out about a new incoming decoder, the sales of the current ones are going to plummet, and they will be left with a lot of old stock.

DStv Explora DStv statement

MultiChoice today announced another innovation milestone with the introduction of its next-generation PVR decoder, the DStv Explora. The new DStv Explora is set to significantly change the way South Africans experience and control their TV.

With the DStv Explora, subscribers can now record up to 220 hours of high definition television, which equates to approximately 100 movies or 150 TV series episodes. In addition, the 2 terabyte hard drive of the new DStv Explora will enable DStv to offer a larger content selection on its popular Catch Up service, bringing the total amount of HD content up to approximately 200 hours, all of which can be accessed on demand.

In plain terms, the DStv Explora is a PVR on “steroids”.

“We constantly find ourselves dealing with the reality that South Africa lags behind the rest of the world in fixed broadband penetration,” says Collins Khumalo, CEO of Multichoice South Africa.

“In the absence of affordable high-speed broadband access for most South Africans, delivering our content via satellite remains the most reliable way to ensure that our customers have the best viewing experience, without buffering or waiting for downloads. We want to provide our customers with a rich, high-definition video-on-demand experience, similar to what they would get in markets where broadband is a lot more accessible. We developed the DStv Explora to achieve this vision,” Khumalo says.

The key launch features of the DStv Explora include:

Expanded Video-on-Demand Content

The DStv Catch Up service has been significantly expanded on the Explora, and now offers three times more video-on-demand programming to DStv subscribers.

“We’ve expanded the number of series available and now also started to introduce series stacking (i.e. making two episodes of selected series available on demand), which will later be expanded to 4 episodes,” John Kotsaftis, CEO of DStv Online says.

“This means that viewers will always be able to catch-up with all the hot new TV series when they become ‘water cooler talk’ at the office, and never miss being part of the conversation.”

The DStv Catch Up service now also includes 30 movies on demand and the content selection will be expanded to other categories such as documentaries and kids’ content in the future.

For subscribers that love DStv BoxOffice, the movie selection will be expanded to 20 of the freshest new release blockbuster movies, ready to rent from the comfort of your couch, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Amazing Content Discovery and User Interface

DStv Explora is packaged with a brand new, stylish HD user interface, which makes finding favourite shows or movies on BoxOffice and Catch Up so much easier. Content is displayed using HD poster-art – just like an Internet VOD service.

The Explora has powerful search features that help customers find programmes quicker and easier as it searches across the eight-day TV Guide, Catch Up, BoxOffice and their own recordings (playlist).

Explora’s remote control further enhances the experience with dedicated shortcut buttons to DStv Central, BoxOffice, Catch Up, Playlist, Search, Live TV and other viewing options.

Built with the future in mind

Khumalo adds that DStv has built this next-generation decoder with the future and the internet in mind.

“More features will be enabled over the coming months such as delivering content via broadband, setting of remote recordings and one-click BoxOffice rentals, just to name a few,” he says.

“We believe the DStv Explora will give our customers greater control of their viewing experience with access to their favourite programmes when it suits them. The DStv Explora is THE device that will take TV entertainment into the future,” Khumalo concludes.

DStv Explora will be available in retail stores from 15 August and is priced at R2 499.

Built for the future?

What does this decoder have that the current ones don't other than a bigger harddrive and an ugly remote, and why can't this fancy new interface be installed on the older HD Decoders?

ungrateful sods. i would buy this over a normal pvr any day. the normal old pvr only has usb that is disabled. the new decoder not only comes with disabled usb ports, but now a disabled ethernet port too. that's double the amount of disabled components! i can only imagine what disabled components the next generation of decoders will have. :)

on a serious note...

is it possible to fill up the current pvr without having any repeats?

^^^ the normal PVR (at least mine) has a disabled ethernet port as well.

ahh... it's easy to spot the people who don't have dstv. i prefer to crumple up my money and throw it at taxis driving in the emergency lane.

Ethernet port – disabled at launch
USB ports – for future use

R2500 for the decoder. you can install you're own 2tb hd for cheaper.

wtf! typical south african rip off. your're DNA should be eradicated if you buy this.

More throw-away technology already obsolete on release.

Seems pointless to me to pay R2500 to upgrade to something that has even more space to watch repeats.

I reckon the price will drop to R1999.99 (R2.5k is too damn high! for an internetless internet pvr).

Next years model will have disabled wifi, and in 2015 we will get disabled NFC and bluetooth and I really can't wait until 2016 when the remotes will come with disabled wireless charging. In 2017 multichoice will introduce 50 new HD channels which will be activated at a later date.

Anyone notice only 1 SAT IN port...

Guess everyone's going to need to upgrade to SATCR, hopefully they've got SATCR networks working for multiple decoders

Comes with a switch in the box so you can use a dual lnb.

Fail. Every decoder after the first dual view has had disabled ports for future use. Years later, they still do the same.
