DSTV HD PVR bugs

Ye, when I go watch TV downstairs where my SD-PVR is, it is so awesome to use that PVR. Everything is fast and it does what it is supposed to. This HD-PVR is really testing my patience.

:D
I can unfortunately say the same about our decoder....

I am one of those totally dissapointed users of the HD PVR - this thing is terrible. One cannot use it to schedule any recordings - this was a very bad and I think embarrasment for Multichoice.

Not sure if anyone had a problem on Tuesday but I sheduled scrubs to be recorded and I landed up with 15 mins of binnelanders or something and 15 mins of scrubs. Absolutely pathetic. Now can I honestly trust the machine going forward to record other shows? :(

There was a general problem in the broadcast - binnelanders started late as well as scrubs - noticed it on the live broadcast.

The decoder comes in at a competitive price of R2499
How many other HD decoders are on the market? How did the writer determine that it is "competitively priced"?

The list of bugs that piss me off:

1) Scheduled recordings are sometimes WAY OFF... missing half of the feature! When I scheduled the decoder to record the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games... I got repeats of the swimming and some girl's beach volleyball... the volleyball was a nice surprise.

2) The descriptions of the programs are NEVER complete. ie "This is a coming of age story about Kie " IRRITATING!!!!!!!

3) The digital sound is buggy on some channels when not in Dolby Mode, such as MM1 when there's no movie on. I know this normally happens when the audio and video run too far out of sync on some DVD players where the DSP doesn't handle too well, it "hangs" for the video to catchup.

4) Coming out of hibernate mode... if you press ANYTHING other than the standby button you're F*#ked.

5) LOL @ the 1080i upscale, only managed 720p until now.

6) All too often the decoder gets "stuck" on a certain line of the 24hr nav bar... of coarse you sit there pressing buttons until something happens, when the decoder stops being confused, you're 80 channels off where you wanted to be... Its a silly problem to have.

7) The fastforward and rewind seems to jump 30 seconds or so ahead from when you pressed pause... its not as precise as the SD PVR (which is as precise as a blunt plank), but it makes fastforwarding through ads in recorded stuff quite a mission... to get exactly to the beginning of the program as it recommences sometimes takes longer than the ad break itself. I know this isn't a major problem... but its irritating none the less and shouldn't happen with recorded digital media.

8) Silly not pre-programming the SD-PVR's or the 1110's remote codes so one remote could control all the compatible decoders. That's just dropping the ball.

9) I'd love to know why there's a eSATA, USB and a LAN port if I cannot transfer content from my PVR to my computer. Why spend money on over-engineered hardware with all these interfaces and not activate them? Were they on the decoder already before Mulichoice contracted them? THEN WHY NOT ACTIVATE THEM? Every other country can record broadcast content except us? I really don't understand that...

10) What the hell is up with the interactive features? like supersprot zone etc? That's just ridiculous! LOL @ "press OK on your remote"

Yes... I can view HD content, and yes, the picture quality is wonderful! But the usability of the decoder itself is not so cool...
I'm quite a patient guy when it comes to "birthing pains" like these but in the end I did spend cold hard cash on the equipment, and i continue to pay cold hard debit order payment for continual customer support and software updates... I'm a little sick of being given the run around over the phone and my emails being avoided.

At least provide some sort of "reparation" for this period of inferior performance... The decoder hasn't functioned correctly since 02 August... ie since its implementation. Something like "Your 'Dualview Fee' has been credited since our hardware is not functioning as advertised"

..yet still obviously pointing out an unacceptable design flaw..

could the code for fixing this be more complicated than the equivalent of an hourly cron job on linux like this:

Code:
loop through shows-to-record {

check whether broadcast time is still correct and, if not, update record schedule time

}

i was thinking about going PVR until i heard the multiple complaints regarding this problem on 702 a few days ago.

alright alright. but is the cost of the whole hd thingie worth it 4 just 1 hd channel? or is there more?

Recording to a separate DVD/HDD recorder has thus far circumvented most of these problems. But I will have to get the HD PVR if I want to record and view HD stuff at my own leisure. Damn HDMI encryption

I really want the HD-PVR since our 8 year old single view decoder is on the blink, but my gosh, my single view is much more reliable at the moment.

MyBroadband was provided with a detailed spreadsheet of the known bugs listed on the user generated WiKi and the action that is being planned to resolve each issues.

Any chance we can see this spreadsheet?

One thing I must admit. My Broadband .co . za you rock. Only on a site like this will individuals come together and setup something like this. I too have a HD PVR decoder and have noticed and experience all the bugs on a daily basis.

Personally I am too lazy to come online and do something about it. Once again MyBB is taking it to the top and looking out for the consumer!! I told myself that it would only be a matter of time till someone on MyBB comes up with something like this.

Kudo's Rudolph :)

Well, the SD PVR was still R1999 at the time...

I THINK that's what the guy means... it wasn't over R4000 or something ridiculous like that... It was competitive with respect to their other satellite products.

Once you watch the sport on HD it makes it worth it! Knowing that there'll be more and more content available in the future is a bonus, but watching real-time sport on HD is what makes these bugs just mild irritations as opposed to stomach ulcers.

It is worth it... as long as your TV is already FULL HD ready and is a decent size and quality. Some of the "not so good" TV's have a really pastel kind of feel to them with HD content... like the colours have been tampered with almost... I don't want to brand-bash here, but look carefully before saving R1000 on a LCD TV with a really inferior Picture Quality, even if it is one of the "big and trusted brands"

One example is the Samsung 40" Full HD TV... The picture is "funny"! It looks like the picture was enhanced using "MS Paint". The picture has a pastel kind of feel and motion looks and feels wrong too. My sister bought one recently and I didn't have the heart to tell her that I find the picture to be far inferior to other LCD's I've seen around. (It was on a mega-special tho)

Its not just samsung... A friend of mine has the B&0 65" plasma (about R150 000 worth of TV) and you had that same kind of sensation with motion as you did with those first LCD monitors with a 24ms response time... that ghosting effect when you played fast paced FPS games, well this Plasma had that kind of feel to normal television and DVD's. He's sitting next to me going "WOW! check the picture! Its like watching REAL LIFE"... I was like "Yeah... amazing!"

Once you watch the sport on HD it

Don't watch sport, and the rest of the programming is just not appealing anymore. If the fiancé didn't watch sport, I would have canceled it a long time ago.
