DSTV HDTV

Sinotech MP-42T9

I am looking to buy another tv end of the year but I would like to use the HDPVR and connect it to my tv via HDMI and have better PQ if possible.

I got my Xbox connected to it using VGA cable set a 1280x720 and it could fool me for not being HD - looks great!

Well you still have more pixels in your set than what's currently broadcast,
although in the horizontal resolution only. PAL is 720by576 so you gain
some pixels horizontally but loose some vertically. It also depends
on the scaler circuitry of your set how good the picture conforms
to that, there is some cropping too obviously.

Well if you're gonna get a new set for HD DSTV and XBOX u may
as well get a full HD set, otherwise wait if you don't have the budget
right now. Wait till prices fall some more and above all don't fall
for NoChoice marketing bs.

So I live in a complex and I've got only one satellite LNB feed, apparently the complex doesn't support the current SD PVR decoder. Does anyone know if I can use the new HD PVR decoder with only one LNB? Can I use a splitter as was suggested?

I am not really concerned about the ability to watch one and record 2, what can I do with only one LNB connection and perhaps the splitter?

Well they can just give me HD on DvB terrestrial digital TV (which I heard was one of the 2010 conditions) and I'll laugh at all you guys using satellite for your compressed to hell multiscum non HD (720p crap is not HD btw) broadcast.

Hope you get a proper 16:9 aspect & dolby 5.1 surround at least..

Does anybody have any Idea on the actual quality of the broadcast? "720p" tells us nothing. Whats the compression levels and the bit rate? Any service level agreements in place to guarantee it's HD and that it's not super compressed?

(My apologies if this has been answered already)

@ nSidious. I don't think it has been answered yet, but at best bet:

You are better off with a digital TV. OK Olympics which I won't follow, but WC football - from what I have heard DSTV will suck - they flogging these guys "suspect, maybe HD ready decoders" which loads will buy..

Get a digital TV - with all the SCARTS and digital HDMI and so-forth imputs.
At least if you don't even have dstv - you can watch it on digital tv in real HD for heavens sake. (if you in reception range of course).

You must just wait for digital TV's to become available - which surely cannot be far off with only 3 months till switch on -then you'll sit with a smile on your face.

anyone know about LG's new lcd Edge tv?

I am one of the people that like gadgets! I was gonna buy a HD PVR over the weekend, but I think I will wait. See the pros & cons first before getting one. Would like to hear the experiences of other people after installing it and watching the content!

Digusting Service

:(i dont care about this HDTV , Multichoice if you are reading this , your call center has got to be the worst customer expierience i have ever had.i connected last night and i am regretting that i ever took out this subsription

This whole HD story smacks of severe profiteerin...

I think I'll stick to SD Dual View for now.... saves me the clutter and expense of having to have TWO decoders just to get two channels watchable... and i already have a DVD recorder with HDD so the PVR option is wasted anyway...

I agree, but oh it's so nice. (although this is monochoice so it's yet to be seen what dogs breakfast quality they going to dish up).

.

Well considering that their SD tv is getting more and more blocky by the day, i doubt the HD feed is going to look that great, and considering they're skimping on the 1080, it doesn't really bode well for a good quality picture...

You ain't seen nothing yet. Have another look when they start useing all that transponder bandwidth for their HD offering.....the rest of the channels are going to suck even more

Pretty much an "up yours" if you don't watch olympics kind of raw deal.

Getting mine installed tomorrow 9 am , but just got this info from installer

Please note that although we are launching the HDPVR today, customers will only start viewing HD content on the 8th of August. This is because the software will only be available then.

The HDPVR will in the interim operate as a Single View Decoder with No recording or HD functionalities

I get the fact that one will only be able to view HD content on the 8th , but the fact that no recording is available till then sucks , I was hoping the EPG etc would be ready :( , aah well lets wait and see , will post back info as soon as its installed

Hi - have just confirmed with the project manager. This is incorrect. There is a delay in activating HD customers at the moment, but this should be resolved later today. The HD PVR is being launched with pre-release software, but it does function as a PVR.

Just bought my HD PVR and in the process of installing it.

Some updated info:
1) You need a dual LNB receiver.

IF YOU WANT TO GO THE DIY ROUTE:

2) You then have to buy a 2 x 8 multiswitch which splits the 2 LNB signals into a max of 8. You can then connect up the 4 for your HD Decoder and the other four for additional decoders. This multiswitch cost me another R580.
3) You gotta buy cable and connectors yourself.
4) the pleasant surprise is that the decoder is capable of tru 720p and 1080i whether or not the broadcast quality is that high is a different story, but its nice to know the decoder is capable.
5) The decoder also UPSCALES all your SD content if you use HDMI: That in itself is worth the money you pay. A decent digital AMP with upscaling costs $$$$$. I've used my AMP to upscale to true 576p using component video via a DSUB connection... the diference in DSTV picture quality on a big screen was phenomenal. Upscaling to 1080i using HDMI will improve the picture quality of the non HD content even further.
6) XtraView is the easiest thing in the world to hookup.
7) The finish matches the rest of my home theater equipment :)

8) had a chat to the guys a SPACE and they rate that the retail price of the decoder will go up to between R2800 and R3000 once the introductory offer is over. This will still exclude installation. I spent over R800 on the switch, cable and connectors... I'm doing the wiring and setup myself so I have no idea what a technician will charge for his time. This means the price, including installation, will be well into the R4000's

I had an HD setup before so I don't factor in the price of a new TV.

Whatever your thoughts are regarding the HD PVR, a few things are for certain:

Its the first HD capable broadcast medium in SA after all this hype. We've been hearing rumours that SABC 3 was going to go HD back in 2006. Digital TV, Telkom media, 4 other broadcast licenses, bla bla bla bla... We finally have a step in the right direction...

Guess I'll just have to wait for the opening ceremony of the Olympics to see if its genuine 720p.

I might be few thousand bucks lighter but I cant describe to you the smile on my face when I hooked up the decoder to find the picture quality of the HD decoder on NORMAL content was MUCH better than my ALREADY upscaled SD PVR's picture quality... That alone made the money I spent worth it.

Expected

I will rather invest in a Octa LNB guestimate R1300.00. Gives 8 independent channels. I know/think the switches sometimes limit the view capability on the viewing channels as with the original dual view.

Anyway glad You are Happy. I will get mine tomorrow. Re the quality ... I expected as much when I read about the Up-scaling and You just confirmed it.

So Wê to all the pessimists. :p

Well to wait a few days for the ...."games" ( real pun) is not an issue as the games start ion the 8th, not? and at a introductory special of R500.00 saving.

Please post back on the the 8th and tell us how good it looks (or how sh*t) and the suround sound etc.
At least the aspect should be right for a change at the very least!
