DSTV HDTV

and no choice has the "balls" to tell me my 400k Bravia is no compatible... LOL!!! we will see!!!

I think he squeezed an extra zero in there somewhere ;p

Most expensive set I've seen (with the exclusion of diamond encrusted oil sheik variants) has been a 200k B&O 65" plasma...

Unless sony has some new secret weapon that they're not telling me about

All you okes hoping to watch HD off your aerial when they launch DTT, well you're gonna have to wait a tad longer. Only after they turn off the analogue signal 2011.

Like a real early adopter I bought my HD PVR this morning (from Ster, Canal Walk, Cape Town - they're flying out of the shop). I did this knowing I had only 1 LNB cable, but plan to rectify that situation ASAP. It'll prove tricky because I'm in a sectional title. I can see there is a dual LNB on my communal dish, but I certainly only have 1 cable into my house. I'm guessing/hoping I can use a splitter/switch jobbie. Otherwise it's phoning-the-body-corporate time for me!

Still it's a good looking machine, and I'm pleased they include an HDMI cable. There's some pretty technical network setup you get offered right in the beginning which I played with in the hopes it would accept my single LNB, but sadly it didn't.

Will post more info as/when I have progress.

OK , got my Decoder installed this morning , and thought I would have to wait a week to see what HD will look like but then I tuned to channel 170 and all I can say is HOLY CRAP !! , they are showing a few HD clips on that channel and man it looks AMAZING !! . Looks like the "HD demonstrations" you see at electronic shops . If this is the quality in which all DSTV content will be shown its gonna be great

Way too expensive for the average guy on the street :( New TV @ 10K + and a new decoder :(

hi lucky guys that already up and running on HD dstv!! I have an old non pvr dual view....it has two cables running into the back (two LNBs?). if i buy a hd decoder can i just unplug them from my old and into the new and be able to watch???

The new HD-PVR needs 4 inputs. So you either need a quad lnb or a multi-switch.

HD and older decoders

As far as I know you CANNOT use an old Dual view decoder to Xtra view link any HD PVR.

You can only use

HD PVR - SD PVR (can link now)
HD PVR - 1110 (Xtra view only available in a few months)
1110 -1110 (can link now)
1110 - SD PVR (not sure)

Myself I have a dual view decoder so wanting to go HD and preserve a second viewing channel I will have to sling out the old dual view and buy a 1110 and an HD PVR.

Flying off the shelves at Makro Strubens Valley yesterday (Sunday, 2008/08/03).
They have a special (advertised on DSTV last week), - Pay R15k (okay, - R14,999), get a 40" Sony Bravia, Full HDTV (1080), and a R2,000 Makro voucher (can be used towards purchasing the HDPVR, or for anything else instore).

buying now

Its interesting that lots of people are willing to buy without having seen the product, i.e in store displays of the content, which I guess won't happen until 8th Aug(?). I'd like to see the picture quality first before parting with my R2500.

Phoned my local dstv installer and they admitted they dont have a clue...they need to do a few but he did say it takes 2-3 times as long to isntall and says i can work on about R1500. he also says that if i unplug my dual view and plug it straight into HDPVR it will work, just have to phone multichoice to activate! No mulit switch needed unless i want to actaive dual view....! can anyone upload a pic of the back of the decoder?

The picture is going to be 1280by720. However it will have compression
artifacts. Still in the beginning NoChoice may decide to provide
a lot of bandwidth to their pilot channel just to get people to buy
into the thing. Then when the real content arrives (Movie Magic
and most sports in HD) then we'll see degradation in signal
or massive subs price hikes to pay for the additional bandwidth.

You can enjoy almost double resolution already without
having to upgrade the LNB and the decoder just with
any PS3 and rental BD movies. Those are at 1920by1080.

Er no. There is no Dual view. The back of the decoder has four inputs. One for TV viewing, one for Record 1, one for Record 2 and one for the future "Video on Demand" offering.
