DSTV price increase in April

I also got the email yesterday. Anyone notice how they didn't even bother to justify the price increase like they usually do. It's almost a case of:

"hey subscriber, we're increasing our price. If you don't like it stuff you"

There's so many excuses they could use, like the weakening Rand, Increased Labour Costs, etc or they could make up excuses like they're improving the quality of programming (hint at adding great channels in the coming year but actually add crap ones).

Some sort of effort would be great, but apparently they don't care enough.

If I was Thabo Moabi (General Manager: Operations - MultiChoice South Africa), I might consider a humorous letter informing clients of the increase as well as highlight the past years highlights.

Multichoice are becoming more like Telkom everyday.
 
Lack of Competition is the real problem !

Without competition they can do what they like, and ICASA (Idiots, Cretins, Aholes, Stupid, All of them) are helping to keep things this way.

At least with Multichoice, if your decoder packs up, they can either fix it or quickly tell you to scrap it. Can you imagine what it will be like with Telkom ? You will have to call their call centre, wait for 5 days, speak to some incompetent, and then wait 6 months for them to sort it out......
 
What a fooking joke!i just subscribed to it last month.i use it just for the sport channels and usualy just watch liverpool matches.this is bull****.im cancelling and dragging my arse to a sports bar once or twice a week.
 
Its thanks to people like you that DSTV and Telkom etc can get away with increasing fees and generally having the collective marketing strategy of a 2 year old. We can appreciate that R30 a month doesn't sound like a lot, but when you already charge over 500 bucks for a rubbish (compared to other providers abroad), then every little bit is just more of an insult. Just now as the market is going to see some light in terms of competition.

Also, its not hard to spot the repeats when they repeat the same shows every day of the week. Get a clue. Sounds like you watch 'loads' in any case, guy with the big time life.

Thanks for keeping the country behind with your thick headed attitude.

I think you guys should do it... and you should start a viral e-mail challenge to let all South Africans know. I think if several thousand people suddenly downgraded or cancelled, they would seriously re-think their prices! Come on.. who is gonna get it going???... post the e-mail challenge here and we will start e-mailing to all our South African contacts!

Why get DSTV if I can get all the series I want earlier on PC? Maybe for the sports..but so much more fun watching the game at the pub with good friends

im not sure you understand the costs involed of hosting england spanish itialian etc soccer

i really think you okes who spend 400 rand a month on cigi's can blow 500 rand a night on drinking need to rethink your stance

think about how much money u blow on crap, then think about 500 for a full month of sport movies series and all the other stuff

personally i dont mind paying for a good service and dstv is an awesome service

maybe i dont watch 5 hours of tv a day so i dont notice the repeats

its not ppl like me, it ppl like you guys who cannot see that 500 rand a month is not alot for what dstv offers
if you think it is cancel your contracts or take the compact offer

i can spend easily 2.5k on drinking and going out a month, now must i sit back and moan about 500 rand when i blow money on cigi's alcohol computers electronics etc

But do you know how cheap TV is in other countries? And that the average wage in this country is less than R3000/month?
 
If you are a rugby, cricket and soccer fan alone. The amount of coverage of the sports you get is phenomenal. If they bolted the sport channels to a compact type package (with E! for the wife), I would gladly take that baby.

And this is actuially one of my fears. that even when the other Pay TV channels come they will not have the great spread of sport. I guess I'll have to hope that the other content they provide will provide enough competition to force Multichoice to drop their prices.
 
As for the pub argument. It would end up costing you way more than R500 a month if you went to the pub to watch a fraction of the stuff you will see on DSTV.

If you want friends. invite them over for a braai or something. Still cheaper.
 
They need this money to bully the new entrants to the market, by paying exorbatantly for exclusive rights on everything.
 
I still think that the bulk of MC subscribers are sports fans.....and there, MC beats any competition. So, yeh, we dogs keep paying up. I just hope Telkom media will be able to stream live sports events over my IP....then I can watch whatever sports I want....

The fact of the matter is the PVR and premium subscribers are now subsidising the Compact, Easyview and Vodacom package customers. Why didnt their subs go up ? What is the premium subscriber getting thats justifying this 6% increase. Problem is when Telkom come into the picture, knowing Telkom as we all do, its going to be R2 cheaper and we will not have real competition for these idiots.
