DStv prices hiked up again

Here's a question for you folks.

-The average adult can only spend around 10-20% of the day in front of the TV (2-5 hours per day)
-of that 10-20% spent watching TV, only around 25% of the channels are really worth watching, if that.
-of those channels, only 50% of it is new content... the rest are repeats.
-of that new content, only 50% is really watchable or interesting...
-of that, around 33% of it is advertising. loud. repeating. irritating. advertising.

so tell me..... what's 67% of 50% of 50% of 25% of 20% ?
worth R700+ every month?

How much profit do you think is reasonable in a year gary?

Let's say you go into a board meeting, what would you tell them and advise they make a year?

This thread is even more deja vu than the other. Everyone's an expert, eh?

...and DStv is EVIL.

:wtf:

Profit by itself is not evil... Greed is evil.
Money by itself is not evil... the "Love of Money" is evil.

If I walked into that board meeting, I would say "Guys, let's lower our prices, restructure our bouquets, and let's appeal to the masses in SA. Instead of 6 Million subscribers paying R600 a month, let's go for 20 Million subscribers paying R200 a month! Let's sell our decoders at or near cost, or even subsidise them or the installation so that we sign up millions more!"

Apart from the admin, there is not much other costs associated with servicing that number of subscribers.

There are nearly 50 million people in SA. A business that only targets 12% of that population is doing something wrong.

If I was still a normal premium subscriber I'd be pissed! I have the HD PVR + Extraview for almost a year now & its a huge step up especially on the HD channels. What does annoy me is all the series & reality on MNET. I would enjoy a good movie around 8pm on Friday & Saturday evenings. Oh well, guess that's what piratebay is for nowadays! Must just say the subscription is a dent in the wallet but so is a full day out & about entertaining & feeding kids..

You were talking about the decoders. Not complete installations... They are subsidising decoders and the R599 installations of single view systems. Also, that is NOT DStv. It's an installation company. There are HD installation packages cheaper than that one.

Gary, you've been trolling DStv threads since I joined. It's getting a bit old.

Now you are doing the same in here thread. What makes you the ex-spert?

Can you really see any reason why they could afford not to increase their prices?

YES ... REDUCE the subs, and expand the customer base ... that way they could minimise increases, or even reduce prices to subscribers.

But that is NOT the South African business way of doing things

This.

Maybe they think the satellite signals get "used up" when more people view it?

Who cares where the link comes from... that is a price for decoder and installation!

I will keep pointing out how greedy DSTV is until my dying day. ... if that irritates you... then good.

Gary can you guarantee that 20 million people can afford 200 rand a month?

As far as i can tell most SA's live on the bread line so where are they going to find 200 rand for dstv? I have not done market data or anything like that but i can tell you right now my gardener and domestic would not be able to spend 200 bucks on dstv.

I am fairly certain there is only about 20-25% of our population who could afford dstv, now you say they can get 20 million subscribers. That seems a lot considering how poor the people of this country actually are.

As i said i have no numbers to present nor do i have anything to back up opinion but half nearly half our population rocking dstv seems a pipe dream.

Another thing and it may be a totally stupid question and i realize it but i will ask it anyway. Does it matter to the people dstv buy from whether there are 3 or 100 million people watching their feed? I'm going to assume it would not matter for random series and what not but the big sporting events and so on would the amount of subscribers you have affect the price of the package?

Just like there are various options for DSTV now, there could be various scaled options for the sub R200 market. Mobile could be R5 a month, Select could be R30 a month, and compact could be R80. It doesn't all have to be R200.

Besides, as much as you think R200 is out of their reach, how far out of their reach is R600????
It's bladdy ridiculous and completely out of line with world prices.
it is just pure plain greed.

Typical SA rip off prices.

DSTV IS ****!
Just go watch the games at your local pub. All the movies look better on REAL hd bluray too.

Oh and when I was in aus last year, it was 100 dollars for real cable, not this dribble dstv is selling.

If Gary was in charge of DStv pricing, they would fold in a month. He obviously doesn't understand the complexities of buying satellite bandwidth, acquiring programming from other networks, broadcasting rights of sports etc. Also, there is a lot of development happening in the background. Big changes coming this year. He also explains that an increase of 6% gives them a certain increase in revenue, but if you look at their profits, a decrease to say R500 would mean they run at a loss. Now, don't say that a decrease in pricing would cause an increase in subscribers, which will balance out. An increase in subscribers means an increase in broadcasting rights to. More programs also costs more. If your broadcasting rights cost more than your subscriber revenue you will sink like the Titanic... Just ask GTV.

Also, If you look at pricing of BSkyB, Foxtel, DirectTV, SkyD etc, you will see that DStv pricing is on par. We might not have as much programming, but that is only because they have double/tripple the subscriber base, because they are first world countries with many well-off people. Repeats are just as common on these networks, as it is on DStv.

Gary, none of your statements are backed by facts and you know it.

yeah, they really are on the ropes financially, that's why they only made more than 6 Billion Rand profit over the last three years.
I totally see now how you mean they can't afford to keep prices from rising! :p
