C'mon Dolby, you should know better... 2GB of ram in this DSTV box, doesn't come close to 3GBs of ram in a Shield.. this has been discussed on the Web so many times, where the performance of the Shield out performs various Chinese boxes running 4GBs of ram. The Hardware on the Nvidia Shield is just way ahead of everything else..

I’m not disagreeing.

But we’ve seen what optimised software can do with the RAM. The iPhone needs half the RAM and even different versions of Android TV use need different amounts. Check Google IO and you’ll see one of the highlights was Android TV 9 being able to run on 1GB.

Android 11 on S905Y4 boots up much faster and operates smoother than Android 9 on S905X . Yes the processor is faster, but it’s not a huge difference - and yet it boots up 20 seconds quicker. That’s attributed to the software more than the SoC

Who says this RDK OS isn’t optimised that 2GB is enough? I’ve never ever heard of it myself - but maybe it’s lightweight because it’s limited? I don’t know

It’s hard to say it’s low, decent or terrible without trying it real world and testing before commenting on performance

Well the complaints has always been about 2GB ram being low, when the Mi Box runs 2GBs of ram perfectly fine..so yes, it's hard to say now what the experience will be like. I'm just pointing out, that even with just a gig of ram extra, the Shields overall experience far outweighs most things out there

But this isn’t Android - this is something else that I don’t know enough about to comment on how it will actually perform.

The reasons I brought up the Shield is because even with ‘only’ 3GB it performs really well for *other * reasons . This box may be the same with ‘only 2GB …’

Well we know the chipset used by the Shield is part of the reason, so need to see what the exact specs are of this DSTV box, including the rest of the internals

I don’t know that Realtek chip either - so really impossible to comment on performance at this stage
 
Ive had a few boxes.

Telkom, ematic, cheap chinese, xbox one s and now a shield

The shield is on a diff level
 
I can't seem to find much info on the RT 1319, In terms of handling Dolby Atmos..

What I do note, is that the Realtek 1319 was in the Roku Ultra from 2019/2020, which isn't a particular good sign if they are using the same chipset introduced 2 years ago

SoCs don't launch every day .

Just about everything out there is using a chipset from 2016 - 2020.

Yeah. Really "top class" of 'em to swap the Amlogic for this.
Excuse being "chip shortages".
Me thinks cheap ass solution and charging that amount of money for a severely limited device isn't gonna cut it.
Think they've managed to score an own goal here.

Not saying it does, just noting that the chipset is an older RealTek one, which didn't have the best of reviews back then with the Roku. In fact, looking around, plenty of the Chinese boxes make use of it, so it must be a more popular SoC to use in these boxes..

I do think Realtek is the cheaper and less performance-orientated option , but I mean look at boxes out still using older chips - and even the latest boxes are still using chips from 2020/2021 (S905X/Y4).

I don't know why these guys want to get in the hardware game though. So much time & effort - and most people have streaming platforms that already exist at home. DSTV should rather have spent the last 2 years and how many million to develop this, into the software from the start

But I don't think this box is worth R1299. So there again, DSTV missed a trick, because now it's a case of competing with an established Mi Box, Stick etc. Boxes that people are pretty much familiar with. I think everything DSTV does, is a bit rushed, without much in terms of thought process.

Could have had a Launch special to first 1000 customers at say R799 or something, because then customers would feel a bit easier. Spending 1300 not knowing what the box is capable of, or how it will handle various apps etc is a big red flag imo.

I mean Xiaomi is in the country, they could have partnered with Xiaomi to release a DSTV branded Mi box, with DSTV and Showmax Pre installed.
