Dual Sim Phone now Obsolete?

Hi guys

so I have a dual sim phone and both sim cards are with MTN. One is my main number which I can upgrade only in a few weeks time so the other sim is the black Friday special.

however, today I noticed that I'm only allowed to use one sim, basically, the other sim says emergency calls only. I tried everything to sort it out but nothing was working. upon doing some research I have learnt that the 2g network is being scrapped so when one sim connects to the data services (4g/3g) then the other can only switch to a 2g network, and since there's no 2g network anymore it won't lick up anything.

here's the weird thing, sim1 is bf deal, sim2 is main. so I want sim1 to be 4g and default mobile data and sim2 to be just 2g for incoming calls. however, its my 4g slot that's playing up. sim1 with 4g/3g slot selected has no network but sim2 has 2g network. if I change the 4g slot to sim2 then sim1 works on 2g network and sim2 has no network(and I need this number for incoming calls).

any idea if the whole 2g network being scrapped thing is playing a part here or could something just happened to my 4g network on my phone?

I really want to help, but I can't bring myself to read that paragraph.
 
TLDR:

OP thinks my phone is no loger working as it should because 2g networks are being scrapped in the rest of the world.


@OP, in SA 2g will stay around. your problem is something else.

Ok, then not sure why a dual sim would be obsolete? Unless OP is referring to his specific phone?

Agree that it is not 2G/3G related.
 
I have a P8 lite dual sim with both sims on Vodacom. My son has one as well, voice on Vodacom and data on MTN. The other day we both lost connectivity on Vodacom on the voice sim (2G) for a couple of hours, I still had data access on the LTE sim. Initially I thought my phone was faulty but when I found out that he had the same issue it was obvious that the 2G was down in my area. If there is any truth in the 2G network being scrapped then its going to cost me a lot more to run a cellphone or I need to get a phone that has LTE for data and something better than 2G for voice.

how many feature phones are there in south africa?

all the feature phones only use 2g for connectivity. all of those phones would stop working.

dont get me wrong, turning off 2g, and using the spectrum for other things would be awesome, unfortunatly in SA that is simply not a reality.
 
It was only for a couple of hours, connectivity returned and everything is back to normal. When I tried to report the outage to customer services they thought I was bonkers.
