E-toll billing system not working: DA

The only reason people are being "bullied" is because they believe themselves to be.
I wish I could just get it into EVERYONE's heads that this is one of those problems that literally goes away the moment you ignore its existence.

The SMS's, the emails, the bills, the so called "summonses"... all of it.
Just ignore it. Completely and utterly.

I Dont like E tolls as I already pay more than the max level of R450 in Normal tolls. But I think that a lot of the opposition to them is based on opportunism. You will try to get away with it if you can, much like all the other crimes in SA.
*Why don't people balk at paying all the other tolls? I pay almost R550 pm just in normal tolls @ R10.50 x 2 per day x 25 times pm and I wait for hours in a queue to pay. Going to Kruger from Pretoria Costs Almost R300 one way. I don't see much civil disobedience at these toll gates. Because people know they can't get away with it. And all those roads existed long before it was decided to toll them too, So the same rules apply. And yes the poor are affected as most people that travel on these roads are from poor/ rural areas. Why was no Fuss thrown about these tolls?? So while I hate paying toll as much as the next guy, I believe we should rethink the whole reason of why we selectively decided not to pay* Etolls* and perhaps come up with a better overall scheme of protestation.

It's they way they are doing it as well as the lack of transparency that are the biggest problems.

The toll roads on the N1 (Limpopo Kruger) and N4 (Mpumalanga Kruger) were built and then tolled after construction finished.

Now lets take N1 between Pretoria and Polokwane, there is a perfectly viable alternative road to use, the R101, is just takes slightly longer, and was the road used to travel north before the N1 was built.

The GFIP just upgraded current roads and did not build new roads, travel patterns and where people stayed and where people worked already existed. They are attempting to toll these and that's why it is blatantly unfair, its not new roads, its upgrade roads and should be free. They could have kept the old roads as they were and could have built new roads and toll them all they want.

Its actually very simple most of the other toll roads were newly built as super roads compared to the alternate b roads they replaced and hence they justified their cost.

1.E-tolls was simply a way to STEAL our previously free highway system by making MINOR upgrades.

2.The level of corruption is apparent if you consider how much in the first place these upgrades costed and secondly the cost of the system itself makes no sense when the revenue could have been collected via a simple effective and efficient levy....which if implemented by 2006 would have meant the overpriced Gauteng upgrades would have been paid for and construction/improvements of highways in Durban and Cape town could have begun already.

Anybody with even HALF a brain cell can see that the only reason this expensive toll system from Kapsh was implemented and pushed through despite huge criticism by the public is so that the privileged in the ANC can get kick backs behind the scenes.(If by some miracle that's not true then the ANC is even dumber than it seems because they implemented such an inefficient system!)

Either way the ANC is to blame for this unlike the other toll roads which we all gladly cough up for without much fuss.

The highways were never free. We have been paying taxes and levies for decades.

E-toll is just a lot more visible because we have to manually pay a bill. We hand over half our salary a month without thinking twice because the taxes and levies are all automatic deductions.

I am happy paying for roads, I do not have the time nor the energy to weekly chase down every damn transaction, dispute errors, and queue to pay an etoll account. To be honest, my tax return gets submitted on the last possible day, even though I will be getting money back... And sometimes I pay the penalties because I submitted it late (yes only once per year is asking too much)....
Sorry the only effective way to bill everyone is by charging a fuel levy.... user pays principle, whell then I need to get a huge refund as I am not using public hospitals or public schools, I pay for electricity and water, waste removal etc...
Why should I pay when there are millions of people passing through gauteng that will likely never see a bill, why should I fund their idiotic system?
Now all the roads are gridlocked with people avoiding the tolls, so any time saved by driving on the highways are lost the moment you get off the highway, if you look at the whole picture travel times have increased. No sorry, it needs to be scrapped, they are just wasting more and more money trying to make the impossible work.

Urban tolling is wrong.
