Could somebody help here.... I achieve speeds of 0.1 mbps to 0.2 mbps using my mac and huawei e220, but if I switch the card to a nokia n95 phone, and connect via bluetooth, I achieve 1.6 mbps?????? Same room in my house, same card, same MTN. I can only get EDGE on my e220 while the phone gets 3.5g. Tested e220 at MTNsp and it is perfect, but they could not offer an explanation as usual.......

help

MTN told me that the modem/receiver in my phone is much better than a huawei modem, thats why the nokia outperforms the modem. Is this true? Surely then they should be supplying better product? My signal at home is obviously weak, but the Nokia manages 1.2 - 1.5mbps, the Huawei 0.1 - 0.3mbps.....................maybe I should use my 56k modem again!!!!!!!

Any other suggestions???? PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE!!!!!

That sounds like BS, i have always got better reception from the modem, i usually have software issues with them and the macs though...
perhaps try a different software version?
It could be reporting incorrectly/creating issues.

Thanks ta1z......Is there any way to force the modem to use HSDPA? Here's the strange part, if I go to a different venue and pick up HSDPA, when I come home, the modem will operate for an hour or two on HSDPA with great speeds. Then it switches back to EDGE and will never find HSDPA again! So it is avail at my home, but the modem refuses to use it for some reason.

Please, somebody, HEEEEEEEELP

Unfortunately its the bad support on firmware drivers for any 3g modem out there for the mac. With the phone you can usually specify -in the phone - to connect to hsdpa - with the modem you need to use the modem's software running on the mac to specify this and it does not exist - I have the same problem, running my modem on my Windows laptop I get HSDPA but a weak signal - and good throughput - but on the MAC I only get GPRS.

It sucks I know - don't have a solution though.

You can force the speed using Vodafone Mobile Connect with the e220, surely the same must be available from MTN.

Vodacom:

MTN:
No software for e220 on Mac?
http://www.mtn.co.za/Support/DeviceDownloads/Pages/default.aspx

I think you should challenge them on this point... Just so you know I can force the connection speed using my e220 on the mac (vodacom), only get gprs unless I force the option to hsdpa

Sputnik, after a year of BS from MTN and no help, you have solved it! YOU ARE A LEGEND .....thank you thank you. It works, forcing 3g on the pref, and at last I am getting reasonable speeds on the e220

I am ALWAYS amazed at the lack of serious technical help from the entrenched players:( ie help that SOLVES the problem.

So often one reads of an unsolved nagging problem -- which then is solved by some private unsung hero.:)

Do these BIG companies just not have passionate staff -- or WHAT is the problem

When V3G was around one could ALWAYS count on him -- bless his holy cotton socks.

V3G is dead -- long live iBURST WiMAX

Also had horrible reception on my e220, after lots of nagging Vodacom today delivered a free poyting flatpannel antenna for my e220 modem. Worked like magic, signal strength doubled. First time ever that they did anything, big surprise that it came just as I'm supposed to renew my contract. Moving to neotel since it took them a year to actually help me out.
