Precisely why I won't be doing it - I'm not committed to the cause.
1) I'm not convinced global warming is happening
2) If it is, is it natural or man-made?
3) Regardless of the answer to 2, can we do anything to stop it?
4)... without making it worse because we don't know what we're doing?
Certain things make sense to do, regardless of my 1 - 4 above, like cutting down on non-biodegradable waste, etc. But many don't, and some may well make it worse (like apparently the mass planting of trees, to prevent global warming, leads to massive erosion)
Anyway, this isn't the right thread to debate these issues, but I wanted to point out that some of us aren't not doing it just because we're lazy, but because we're also making a point (just one that's opposite to the point you're making).

People just seem to miss the point completely!
It has nothing to do with electricity saving etc, its to show you actually give a damn. Just turn off your lights for an hour (wow...a whole 60mins 
)? Is it that hard? Jeez...so what...sit in darkness and watch TV? Even the light from the TV will be enough to light up a room. If its still not enough...put on a torch?Have said it before...we have done so much damage, but sadly the people that dont give a **** (and go through life with closed eyes) out number the people that do...saw a movie recently about human race being wiped out. I kinda agree...this isnt our planet...we merely exist on it...and look how we have f#cked things up on it in just the last 500years...so sad.

Well the good news is i watch tv with the lights off so i will inadvertently being showing my support
Look at electricity usage for the previous hour, or historical, and compare with the '60 Minutes of lights-out' that will give you an idea. There are also satellite images that are most probably going to be taken (as it was last year)
Its not rocket science.

Can you give me a link to these pictures that you said were taken as i would love to see, also how many staff do you think it would take to spot the lights on or off around the world. How many sat's do they use because wow it must take quite a few to get the whole earth.
also how long does it take before we have the count of how many houses had lights off

Still I don't see how this will help global warming. It's like one of these events where everyone thinks it's fashionable/cool, and then continue with their daily lives the night afterwards. These "one-off" wonders are just so a few people can feel good about themselves without really doing anything.
Will the city itself turn its lights off as well? I mean... What is city council doing with regards to earth hour.
If Cape Town is still lit up like a christmas tree during that hour at the office blocks everyone complains about being on all the time then I dunno.

If you don't give a damn about global warming the do it for the stars (the celestial types) and light pollution. If enough people switch of all their lights, including security lights then people in the cities will be able to enjoy the sight of the milky way and the thousands of stars they never get to see normally. That's why I'll be joining in - awareness of light pollution!
I can't believe we still have people that are so ignorant about global warming. It's really quite sad. It's a lot like the "smoking isn't bad for you" people in the olden days. No wonder we have so many religious nuts, conspiracy theorists and militant political supporters in this country.
