Yeah hence why we're so spoiled in our attitude and refuse to use less. If we'd been paying as much as the rest of the world we'd have long time ago learned to be a little more cautious in our power use.

And whose fault is it that the problem has been left for so long? I don't deny that we have grown as a country but this should have been strategised years ago. Yes, we have to grin and deal with it for now but if we don't raise a stink about it , it will happen again and again.

We can blame Eskom but these are essentially government companies. If government doesn't release funds, Eskom can't do much. The same applies to PRASA. Without government providing the funds many of these agencies are crippled.

What about poor debt control by Eskom? They will have plenty money if they collect all their outstanding debt.
Also, they should not real be dependent on government funding.
They're both equally to blame. Eskom had a duty to timeously report the financial requirements and associated severity to government. Government has a mandate to provide electricity to the country through its protected monopoly. Playing the blame game however gets nowhere in SA though as accountability is a foreign term...

That would irritate me too. I suppose I'm lucky enough to live somewhere where we don't get outages unless a tree goes over a line or something (and then it's quickly fixed.)
A lot of people don't know but Eskom now use a lot of private contractors. This has to me seen a big improvement in how quick the power is restored when something goes wrong.No doubt Eskom is not perfect in any way. I just think that we're far too quick to forget the masses of people they've had to put on the grid these past years and spit the dummy way too quick. We should always strive for first world standards but perhaps be a little more tolerant given the fact we are living in a developing country. For a developing country I think you will find Eskom provide excellent standards relatively speaking (compared to say Brazil or India). I'm biast in that one of my best friends works quite high up in Eskom and she's no lazy, incompetent idiot. There's another side to this story.

Eskom cannot cut Pretoria's power because Gwen decided not to pay Eskom. Guavament has for too long been forgiving when it came to outstanding bills and Eskom did nothing in turn. Guavament did not want to invest the money in the past the rather kept it to themselves and likewise Eskom rather rolled in the money and the fat cats lived a good live.
Now nobody want to take the blame and they like blaming it on the past since it's convenient.
As a businessman, I'm of the opinion that if you reach a point where you require a loan to the extent that they required (because they cannot raise a bond issue to cover the necessary capital requirements) or alternatively hold a country ransom, you've failed as a company, from top-down. As much as I am an optimist about SA, I find the Eskom situation diabolicle...

Agreed. That's how a service works. If they really gave a crap about power demands, they would've installed two-way power meters ages ago to allow anybody to get discount by generating their own power and pumping it back into the grid.

So we are being asked to turn off everything except 1 light in order not to embarrass Eskom when the lights go out during the WC ?

Bah, I'm personally of the opinion that if it comes to that, I'll turn on every heater, light, PC and TV I own. If Eskom goes "kaput" then all it will do is show the world just how pathetic and badly-run Eskom is.
Viva! They deserve nothing less than to be humiliated in front of the world. Funnily enough though, it won't be Eskom the world remembers, just South Africa
