Kinda surprised this hasn't been posted already (well couldn't find it if it was, sorry).

Under the worst circumstances, South Africans will be asked to turn off everything but one TV - so they can continue to get updates - and one light.

Exactly.
Close those environmental disasters down, and we do not even need that new power station.

but, no - let us poor consumers subsidise them with our electricity payments, and then cut us off for good measure.
 
There was a subsequent article stating that there is no crisis and they have 7000mega watts of spare energy - the 200k odd additional tourists will only increase the power consumption by around 200mega watts, so if there is load-shedding, I'm gonna be calling BS on Eskom's part - yet again! Sorry, can't find the article, but it quoted official Eskom employees...
 
I'm tired of Eskom. Screw them, I pay for what I use, provide the damn service.

I swear as soon as possible, I want to take my home off the grid or as much of as I can. **** these people.

Pay pay pay and never get the service agreed while others get it for free. Take the freeloaders off the system and sort your paying customers out first!

And yet it would be so easy if we all just used electricity responsibly like people do in the rest of the world, to bring down costs by 30%. Use what you want, just make a few small changes like switching things off at the plug and using power saving bulbs etc. No great sacrifice would be needed and the costs would stay low. The problems could be sorted out if we wanted to. But we seem to lack the will to fix problems in this country. What would we have to whinge about then ? God knows we love to whinge.

With that said nothing will happen. Power will be fine and supplied for the duration. No drama as usual just a lot of alarmist bollocks.

And yet it would be so easy to run Eskom like a proper business. Supply meet demand , all sides are happy but no, we'd rather pay "performance" bonuses and not increase capacity or do case studies like we're supposed to.

Don't blame the consumer, blame the idiots running the utility into the ground.

As Eskom released the statement, you are saying that Eskom is talking bollocks.

.. the duration of what? The SWC? You are aware that we 'll still live here and need some electricity AFTER July 2010, right ?

Demand has increased from 30% of 45 million in 1994 people to 80% of 50+ million in 2010. So obviously supply will decrease and hence costs increase. Anything wrong with adjusting to the realities of the world rather letting them rape you up the bum ? Some South Africans seem to rather take it up the bum if it means they have something to moan about. Strange people.

The good news is they are investing in new infrastructure so that power gripes/high costs become a thing of the past.

We've been paying way too little for waaaaay tooo long. Not our fault of course. But they are now investing, the upside of paying too little is now the downside as demand exceeds supply.
