Esquire PriVio Light Tips, Tricks and Comments

The problem seems to be with the way the Win 7 handles the files on the unit. I have the same problem with also the Win 7 Ultimate 32 bit. I normally use just a win XP pc to do this and everything works fine. The moment I try the win 7 Ultimate 32 Bit again , the unit does not see the files on the TV. I am also researching this problem. Cheers - Mo Desai

a glorified external casing

this AM my machine decides there's nothing in the movie file ... only the root is there. So i do the upgrade as per intructions, but alas, now there is nothing. The LCD is blank. What now?

Take it back and get a replacement.

Can anyone give any insight into what the usability of these things is like? Things like look and feel, transitions, presentation; are you stuck with a (f)ugly text-only menu system, or does it have some pizzazz to it? (...and howcome no-one's had anything to say about this in 9 pages of commentary?!?)

The menu system is easy to use. No spills and thrills or bells and whistles. Simple and functional - plays the movies great but certainly not purchased to sit and watch the menus but the content of a hard drive etc.

I guess the reason no one has commented on it is because the menu system has no issues. It has a text and iconic type menu system which is simple in design.

Perhaps if you had asked earlier someone would have had something to say in the last 9 pages of commentary - simple deduction i would venture.

Ah, a comedian - how droll. Still, maybe some background would clarify my position: I currently have ready to give to my SO a frankly, IMNSHO, fugly-to-use MediaGate MG45 that, through trade contact I got at negligible cost; so now all I need for it is a drive. But I don't really like it and, as one does, want to give her the best - you know how it is.

So I'm considering the PriVio Lite as an option but, not by hook or by crook can I find a DAMN thing on t3h int3rtub3s about what the bloody thing is like to work with - imagine my frustration. Which is what brings me here, having burned through 9 pages of what us guys (and don't get me wrong, it's good valuable info that I take to heart) but it still gives me NO input on WAF ...it's vexing.

So, can anyone expand on the last somewhat backhanded response?;)

I aim to entertain ;) Typically i am using it for my daughters movies and from time to time play some others as and when required. The menus are boring but user friendly - simple to understand and to use. DO i want another Privio Lite? No - why? - because there are other formats now that just take too damn long to convert or are just a pain and i have no time to format i.e. h264 and MKV. Other than that everything else about it is fine. Except the one i have i can't upgrade the firmware apparently (had it in at Esquire) and as luck would have it bought it when the new one was out but got the one "just before" so that sucks! I recon i will spend a bit more and buy something i can really use which has network capability and is possible to upgrade to WiFi. Why? Because i have a double story and previous owners had their entertainment area upstairs so ALL media installations were done there INCLUDING DSTV cabling etc... My study/games room is also there and we watch TV downstairs and would be easier to get more movies to it via wireless.

But again, Privio is nice, easy to use, but doesn't support newer formats.

I am thinking of the Playon!HD unit which takes a H/drive.

See, this is a whole lot more helpful, thank you. :p The preceding 9 pages :D have told me all I need to know about formats and short of .mp4 I basically don't care anyway: this box is really meant to be a (HA! (try prying something out of their grasp once you've given it to them!)) temporary solution until I can put , for example, a swish XMBC box together (yes, it has to be pretty and basic black won't do). So: PriVio it is then!

Yes Privio will do :) for MOST formats! I am also toying with a multimedia PC idea. I just need a reasonably priced case!! XMBC or Boxee. Graphics card also doesn't have to be a killer but preferably a dual purpose i.e. TV in and out for play and recording thought again how much do i want to duplicate - i.e. have PVR, DVD recorder etc etc etc etc. Perhaps just another media player - decisions decisions.

I also remembered i have a Media PC Remote that i got with something - may have been a creative labs sound card from a couple of months ago. I know i have the remote receiver now just to remember where i put the actual remote! Would save some dough!

Though it's had minimal MyBB love another one that may merit looking at is the Egreat EG-R2 - about whose menus I also know nothing (and should really be discussed elsewhere anyway) ..for now this step is going to have to be the PriVio. (see the photo page here for some good, actually helpful pics on the EG-R2)

Looks prety good! Thanks for the links. Just have to get through the 2010WC now and then decide what to do!

Just another 3rd World Product ?

I received mine with a 1Tb disc included - 2x500Gb partitions. Took about 11 hours to format via the USB connection to 1x1Tb partition.
.
I can see all my movies via the USB connection from my laptop, but I have 2 directory with 250 and 185 Movies in, which just shows as "root" on my TV. I'm also on the latest firmware version. I can see everything on my TV as soon as I break the directories down to only have less than 50 movies in it.
.
In comparison with my MVIX680HD, this is a complete piece of rubbish - not surprised if you look at the difference in price. Luckily I received mine as a gift, so I won't feel any loss should I dump it in the rubbish bin within the next week or so

Wicus - are you using W7??? If so, use XP!!! I had the same issue. W7 formatting is different and not compatible with Privio!!

Hie. I just got a PriVio Light with v20100102 firmware and 1TB hdd. I have problems with reading media files (movies, music & photos). If i copy alot (about 300) of movie folders into a movie subfolder, the Privio fails to read the whole movie subfolder. But when i connect the Privio to my PC i can see the movies. And if i copy a few movies the Privio is able to see them. Whats the work around?

Are you formatting with W7? Please use XP for best results. W7 doesn't format the same so the PriVio can't see the movies.

Is this the whole NTFS/FAT32 thing? If so, why not just format a drive with any vaguely recent Linux live-cd - gParted does a bang-up job of formatting to any file system you want - FAT32 being a notable case in point.

i have the same problem, i copied movies from my windows partition to the privio worked fine but copied music from my mac to the privio it doesnt pick up anything.... whats the deal?

ok i guess the deal is I have asked twice and no one has confirmed that they used W7 (windows 7) to do the format. This isn't the "whole FAT32/NTFS" thing because BOTH work!

To reiterate: PRIVIO WORKS WITH NTFS OR FAT32 BUT YOU HAVE TO USE WINXP TO DO THE FORMAT FOR BEST RESULTS BECAUSE W7 DOES NOT FORMAT THE SAME. My Privio works fine with that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is a limit per folder - not sure what it is but just count how many you CAN see and then create a NEW folder i.e. Movies 2, Movies 3, Music 2, etc etc etc and spread them out. Using windows create the new folders and then MOVE the other movies and it will take a couple of seconds really.

Ahhh so it's a *generation* thing, as in Win7 has later generations of the filesystems than XP (which stands to reason, dunnit?) and that, we presume, puts the kibosh on a successful format?

But as more people move to having Win7 exclusively/killing their XP systems, that does rather bolster the argument for using gParted, dunnit? :p
