hey all, where can i get the ethernet adapter for my modem? and how much will it cost about, and will i need anything specific, i currently have a regular cnet switch... thanx in advance...

The ethernet cable costs R250 from Nowire ( www.nowire.co.za )
A switch won't help! I would suggest a broadband router (D-Link DI-604 or Linksys etc.).
They cost about R360-R500, and are reliable and easy to set up.

Before anyone confuses you with the words IPCop and Smoothwall, just go and buy your router and set it up. Speak to Kallie at Sentech to help you configure the router settings. Its very simple to do and runs well. The only issue you may have is with speeds and occasional disconnections.

Whats wrong with smoothwall.......got it up and running in 15 minutes and have zero linux experience....

cost me nothing (had an old pc) and have had no problems with it!!!!!

Nothings wrong with it. The dude is clearly a newbie and when I asked the same question, also being a newbie, I got swamped with suggestions around IPcop and Smoothwall instead of a router. A router is simpler and cheaper.

You would not believe what it took me to get this friggin P1 working!!!!! I would rather give a bull oral favours than to have to expereince that again!!!

I must agree with MyLowBW here. Also, many MW users don't realise how much easier &
simpler life is with a fairly cheap broadband router (correctly configured)!!
i.e. Changing the Tcp Receive Window (using something like Dr. TCP) to about 16384.
(At 128-512K access speeds, anything higher will be inefficient) and changing the
MTU setting to 1450 (on all connected PC's as well as the router itself).
I will never go back to a dialer again! :)

thnx for all the info guys, i thought i would need a router, to set up IP and all that ****, the problem i have is i wanna move my server downstairs and my modem and antenna is upstairs... i cant buy a router right now so i think i'm gonna just get a USB to ethernet connector, saw them at esquire, and just connect the modem to the network cable and run it to the server then convert back to usb... hopefully shall work, i know somebody else who did that, else i wouldnt even try, hehe, thanx again, appreciate it...

USB 2 Ethernet 2 USB? Nah thanks I'll stick with my smoothwall like kickass. Been doing it since the program came out a few years ago and never been hacked/fiddled or fscked with :)

Getting port scanned by IS this morning ..... 196.34.113.99

Probably harmless, but nice to know ......... [;)]
